We're traveling next week to Kansas and I need suggestions on what to take on the plane besides lots of snacks. He has a couple of books he's Interested in but no really small toy to take. We have layovers in Phoenix . Last time it was so easy as he was 9 months and content with Cheerios and a small nap but we had direct flights. They are 1.5 and 2.5 hour flights.
I just bought some stuff for Ada for our flight next week. I got a new book with pop up flaps. I got a travel magna doodle. A cover for my iPad so she can play games. Munchkin traveling flash cards.
I haven't tried any of them out yet though because I want them to be new for the flight but I hope she likes them.
we just flew across country in July. Our flights were 4 hours + 2 hours both times. DH and I have flown with him a bunch but this was my first time alone.
The things that helped the most was- upgrading to economy plus- on united I couldn't use the tray table with him on my lap if I was in a standard seat, get an aisle seat, board as late as possible while letting him run around gate while I say "get your energy out before the airplane ride" when people side-eye my running around child.
He mostly used the ipad and a plastic dinosaur and a small book. I brought stuff I was ok with losing (plastic animals and cheap, small books). Between snacks, sippy cup of water (and I let him have juice when the beverage cart came by) and running up and down the aisles we survived.

I managed to find a small shape sorter and a mini slinky. I managed to lose the slinky before she got it, but I think it should have been great. I checked a lot of the "impulse buy" stuff by the register at BRU/TRU and saw some stuff that worked. I also would say check out some 99 cent stores. This way if the items are not a hit, you won't mind tossing them quite as much.
Also, ask the flight attendants if they have games/toys for kids. The flight we took provided some paper doll cut outs and snacks, you just had to ask. Mel also loved the free headphones they gave her. She didn't wear them for long, but she liked playing with them.
