I used to buy only blocks, but now it really depends on how lazy I am feeling or what I'm using it for. Sometimes I buy sliced - for softer cheeses like havarti - if it's going to be for sammiches, etc. Our slicer isn't the greatest. I buy parmesan in a wedge, mozarella whole (and string cheese for max), cheddar either a block or slices, etc. Damn, we eat a lot of cheese. Trader Joes only carries organic mozarella shredded, so for pizza, I get that but it's the only pre-shredded cheese I buy.
