Do you think it was the quality or just paint is bad in general? I don't think staining it will work because we have to patch areas of the concrete so the stain would look weird :/
I'll definitely look into stain more then! I thought it was out automatically because we need to do some patches. I like the look of stain much better than paint (obviously - who doesn't?)
I'm not sure. Some of the work that was done in our home (by the owner 30 years or so ago) was really high quality. Later work... not so much. FWIW, there seem to be different issues depending on the layer. The green and black (bottom-most layers) have worn away in spots. There were red and blue layers that bubbled a lot and most of them got pulled up with the peel-n-stick vinyl tiles. It's a grab bag of grossness. lol
From what I've read, the variegated look of the stain can conceal imperfections and patches in the concrete. I've never seen it in person, though.
ha, nursecramer, clearly you are already all too familiar with paint on concrete. All the problems with bubbling and peeling was why I asked you about it in your basement reno thread. lol at grab-bag of grossness.
OP, I'm definitely not a fan of painted concrete if you can work out something else.
We used epoxy on our garage floor. I don't know if I'd use it on a basement floor but I know some people do. Our garage had some had some grading issues...rain and melted snow from our vehicles would puddle and run toward the wall instead of back toward the garage door like it's supposed to. So we scarified and ground down the concrete ourselves and painted on two layers of epoxy to seal it back up. We used the professional grade Rustoleum product and it's held up great for the last 3 years! We use the garage as a workshop as well so it gets a lot of use and the epoxy makes the space a lot nicer and easier to clean. In all of my research the solvent based epoxy held up much better than the water based but the smell is really bad. I have been looking a bit into doing something with our concrete in the garage and the screened in porch that are connected. We have two different colors of concrete out there.
I am leaning towards staining it because it should conceal the color differences but also wear nicely so your patches shouldn't be a problem. Also if you are worried about it being slippery you could always add some texture into it.
We actually painted the concrete slab in our home. We used Behr products - Floor & Porch paint - and their primers and sealers. It was a huge undertaking. We used the paint because we had a ton of stuff that needed to be patched - holes from tack strips, etc. While I like the look - the sealer messed up the paint job and our entire project was reimbursed by Behr. We are now in the process of covering it up with different flooring.
Ours is not slippery but the slab has quite a bit of natural texture to it. There is an additive you can put into the sealer for grip.
I don't think we can use epoxy paint because it's a patio. Apparently sunlight makes epoxy paint yellow and fade. I'm off to research stain this weekend.

YHL painted the concrete floors in the sunroom of their first house. I can't seem to find a post, but I did confirm by looking at the source list (Valspar paint).
