I love too when people try to find the smallest nuances in their faces to "prove" they aren't identical. "Well his ear is funny! They can't be identical." Aw thanks for proving the doctors and y'know science wrong with your obviously very accurate power of observation.
I always thought that twins "ran in families" as they say. My half sister was a twin, but her mom had a m/c and lost one of the twins. I am not sure how it happened because she was pretty far along at the time. But I was really young so I don't know the details, and we never talk about it but I think my sister is pretty lucky.
My stepmom was also pretty sure she was going to have twins before she even got pregnant because her mother was a twin and so was her grandmother.

Along maternal lines, hyperovulation (I think that's what it's called?) can be hereditary. And since it's a whole sploosh of sperm up in there, if there are 2 eggs released there is actually a decent chance they'd both be fertilized and implant etc.
Identicals are just God's way of saying "neener neener!!"
My dad is an ID twin, and I used to buy into the old wives crap that "twins skip a generation" and was excited/terrified that I could have twins. Then H's BFF and his wife got KU w/ triplets. Cue much googling and learning. Now I'm that annoying person that corrects people.

Are the triplets identical? Can you imagine how much the get stopped in the store? :-)

Oh my gosh TRIPLETS! I don't know what I'd even do.
I DO know someone w identical triplets!! I am pretty sure they were stopped alllllllllllll alll all the time. They are 5 now and super duper adorable still, I don't know how she deals day to day. Either with having triplet boys OR the cute!!!
TrudyCampbell, sunshineluv they're girl/girl/boy, so most certainly somewhat fraternal. The mom was talking this weekend about how she things the girls might be identical, but I think no, as they look very different.
It was just a madhouse insaneness when their brother was still alive. Going anywhere with them was just crazy. We got ropped into going swimming with them one time because, y'know, 3 babies + 2 parents =/= swimming.
a neighbor of mine has triplets- she's basically housebound. They go on walks twice a day but going anywhere else with them is crazy. And they are just starting to walk now (will be 1 in october). She has her hands full. The dad travels a ton for work too

Kind of random but the town I teach in is rather small. Each graduating class is around 200 students. This past year we had 6 sets of multiples! 5 sets of twins and then 1 set of triplets. The triplets were identical girls, who up until their junior year you could not tell them apart. So crazy for such a small community.

He was born with something called Transient Leukemia that went away but came back before his 2nd birthday as AML. He died a few months before their 3rd birthday. @therealmc probably knows more about that stuff.
The girls just turned 5 a week ago.
It's hard for their mom because she gets asked all the time if they're twins. If she doesn't feel like going into it she just says they are. The girls know they're triplets though and talk about their brother still, so that's good.
I dont think number 2 is rude to ask. At least not on a message board. The truth is, fertility treatments greatly increase the chances of twins, and it is only natural to wonder if that is how they came about. I dont get offended when people ask me, but I also didnt experience infertility and need to take that route, which would probably make me feel differently. I just dont think anyone who asks that ever means any harm, they are just curious.
I forget the questions so I will answer them in another post.
I understand that ID twins are a fluke, but we have 3 sets in my family! I mean, that's just strange, isn't it?
IMO, fluke really isn't the correct word. They really don't know what causes them and have so far, been unable to link anything genetically. There are numerous proteins in our bodies that have multiple responsibilities yet scientists don't know what they all are...yet.
The only reason they know that they don't know is because they are able to stop proteins from being made. Even though the only job they know that the protein does is not life threatening, mice and other animals die without it. All it has proven is that they know they are clearly responsible for other things but they don't know what.
My point is that they just don't know. ID twins could be caused by some random protein that does 5 other things. They just haven't figured it out yet.
I actually know a scientist (strange guy) who believes that twins are natures way of giving researchers the ability to study medical anomalies. The amount of medical information we know today by studying the cells of twins and multiples is vast.
I think fluke can be an appropriate word because ID's are much, much more rare than Fraternals. The percentages. So even if we dont know how it happens, we do know they are super rare! Part of the definition of fluke is, 'Unlikely chance occurrence" so, I think that part is accurate!
1. My Grandmother had twins, one didnt make it after the delivery. She also conceived triplets, (yowza!) But miscarried
2. No fertility treatments. . 3. No bc, we did the pull out method. We decided to start trying for #2, did the deed 3 times, took a test 9 days later and was pregnant!
4. They are di/di which means they have their own sacs and own placentas, so Dr's say fraternal. There is a small chance they could be identical if they egg split early, its just a lot more rare. For some reason, I have this lingering suspicion that mine are going to be identical. We will know when they are born if they look totally different, but if not we will have to do the test to find out.
