It depends. They're pretty flexible with drugstore brands, but may give you some grief if it's a more expensive item. They refused to let me exchange an Urban Decay item a few months ago because I didn't have the receipt.

They let me exchange a defective bottle of Alterna Caviar Shampoo without a reciept since the cap on the bottle broke and all the shampoo drained out. I think it depends on why and the manager.
