So Adam said his first word at like 10 months and by 16 months (the exact age Nolan is now) he had a handful of words in his arsenal. Our Pedi did say that 2nd children may often take longer to speak because they are so busy watching their older sibling, but I a teeny part of me is wondering when Nolan will have his verbal explosion, I figured by now he would be saying more. All that he really says is Ba-bye and Uh oh, then there is Ba (ball) and La(light). That is all she wrote other than a lot of babbling. I do know he understands me though because he does follow direction, but it is sooo hard not to compare the boys. We do have a hearing test scheduled for next month I believe since his ears have been red.
So I ask you MOOKS, is your second LO taking longer to speak? Just curious.
My second LO took much longer to speak. I found that he was able to get things he wanted without speaking, either from us or most likely the older sibling. I also found, that as much as we tried, that Ethan "talked" for Jack a lot. Or, Ethan would say "can we have a snack" without us really forcing Jack to ask for it himself or verify that he wanted one also.
It's hard to tell, because Abby did have a speech delay, which we attributed to her prematurity. So in that sense, he's ahead, but taking her prematurity into account, he's about even or behind where she was. Just the last couple of days I've noticed him starting to make more sounds. Mama and Da are consistent, and mum-mum for yum (or anytime he wants food). Just today he started saying ba for ball.
I'm not too worried either, but damn this board has so many LOs with amazing vocabularies that it kinda hard not to compare sometimes, as hard as I try to just follow Nolan's own development.

Well, Claire didn't have a word explosion until close to 20 months, before that she only had a handful of words. Charlotte definitely has more words at this point then Claire did, and I was assuming it was because she hears so much more conversation all the time since Claire never stops talking.

Ds1 had amazing vocabulary very early and was talking in sentances by 18 months, DS2 has about 5-10 words but understands directions. My pedi says as long as he has more words by 18 months he is good that second talk slower especially with siblings that talk a lot.

We have very, very few words here. Mama, Eis (ice cream, usually when he hears the ice cream truck) and Auto. He says some things sporadically, but not regularly. I'm assuming it's because of the two languages, but I also think it would be completely normal otherwise as well.
Yes, I feel like Lydia was talking in sentences by now (slight exaggeration, but remember she was not mobile at all so all her brain power was focused on talking). Calista has a few words up her sleeve but not nearly as many.
I am hoping since she is 15 months today that she will either have a word explosion or a walking explosion soon. (Or is it 18 months)
Nick was closer to 18-20 months when he had his "word explosion" so I really am not expecting Alex to be much different. Now he talks non stop. Alex is very different in that she says random things a lot but not consistently. She does sign and understand though so I am really not that worried about it since she has words. Also she does the same as Nick and says things, then forgets them and picks them back up later. All normal in my book.

Pretty much this. My DS1 never STFU, so I'm sure that's why DS2 has more words than his brother did. In our house at any given time there is so.much.talking.
DD1 had an amazing vocabulary by this time. DD2 barely says a handful of words. She started walking around the same time as DD1, but the speech is way slower. I keep telling her she needs to talk because she gets frustrated when we don't understand what she wants. For the most part she does get what she wants though without Gavin to say much.
