A few weeks ago H found out he was in A-fib. He ended up needing a transesophogeal and they had to shock his heart back into rhythm. We now owe about $6,000 to the hospital. We are very young, and had no debt besides our car loan, and a few student loans we aren't paying off yet before this. Being an adult sucks. wahh.
Aww, I'm sorry. Sounds like it was scary! I have owed bajillions of dollars in hospital bills it feels like. You can always call and double check if you qualify for any income assistance. At one hospital we got nothing, and another paid our $5,000 bill in full and said we didn't owe anything for a whole calendar year, so they vary so much.
That sucks, but I'm so glad he's ok. Most of the time, a hospital will work with you- they would rather get something than nothing, ya know? Certainly ask about a payment plan- my hospital will take as little as $30 a month. As long as you pay on time or let them know if you are going to be late, they won't send you to collections.
Also, make sure everything is right on your bill. When Sadie was hospitalized, we had three separate charges- one for the emergency room, one for room and board, and one for the doctor. They forgot to bill my insurance for room and board (about $2000), and when I called to ask about it, instead of refiling, they just wrote it off. You never know what they might do to help you out.

this! definitely call them and work something out. it'll take some of the stress off.
yes, being an adult does suck : ( we are working on paying off some debts from not having jobs for too long. glad he's ok!
Wow, that is a lot of money but it is great that you guys have done so well financially thus far. Shit, when I was out of college, my husband and I had about $100,000 in college loans for our two B.A. and one M.A. degree.
