I think I'm going to ask for a DSLR for Christmas. I don't want something terribly expensive, and I prefer lighter weight. I used to be big into photography in high school - dark room and all! I wasn't the best, but I wasn't bad and I think it would be fun to pick up again, but I need the equipment! Recommend away!
I have a Canon Rebel T3i I think. It's one of their entry level cameras. So far I love it. I haven't had nearly as much time to play around with it as I like. Shocking I know. I did our Christmas cards this year. I also know Photoshop very well, so the combination produces pretty good results. Someday I would love to get a nicer sports lens and/or a macro lens.
Depending on you budget the Canon t5i is great! I just bought the body to use professional. It has the newest sensor in it. In reality if you Are comparing price to price Canon and Nikon are about the same quality, but with slightly different features. I recommend going to camera stores or a place like best buy and play with the cameras. It it is around Christmas you will see a lot of different possibilities for packages. Also, the older models go on sale. It used to be that Canon would change lens mounts with their new generation of cameras, I don't think they do that as much any longer. The problem with that was that you had to reinvest in lens every time you bought a new camera. I also recommend that you buy a fixed focal length lens, like a 35mm or 50 mm. A decent one starts around $100, but you can spend a lot more.
I don't know what your budget is, but canon rebels have served me very, very well and they're lighter weight than the more professional bodies.
My first digital camera was a canon rebel (I have a Canon 5D Mark II now) and it's super lightweight and user friendly. Costco usually has good prices on packages. You can buy some nicer lenses later. Team Canon all the way!
