So I quite possibly waited until the very last moment today to run. Now these dark clouds are moving in and we are supposed to have thunder and lightning, but right now is actually quite nice aside from the clouds. But I don't want to get caught in it, DH is out of town and can't rescue me.
Last night we had quite a storm, akin to a Midwestern storm. It's supposed to happen again tonight. Yikes!!
I'm sure I'll be fine with a rest day today, brick tomorrow and long run on Monday
You cannot let the weather bother you. You cannot control it and everyone has to deal with it. In 2008, at my second IM, the weather forecast was for sunny skies. Instead, it poured. It didn't just pour. It was like God sucked up all the water in the lakes and dumped it on us. All. Day. Long. Flash flood warnings, gigantic puddles, the works. The race goes on. No one bailed because of the rain. We just said, "yup, it's raining" and went on our merry way. FYI... The weather that day has become a bit legendary among the IM community. Sort of a new standard, like if its not raining as hard as it was at IMLP2008, then it's not really raining.
Mike Reilly, the announcer, will talk all morning, getting everyone ready. Listen to him. He will tell you that the only thing you can control all day is your attitude. He's 100% correct. People who have bad days generally have a bad attitude. Something WILL go wrong. You WILL feel like crap, like quitting, at least once during the day. How you handle that feeling is entirely up to you.
So, stop looking at the weather forecast, prepare for any type of weather, and focus on your mental game. Race day is not about the physical training. It's about execution, which is entirely mental.
