Pardon my ignorance the last passport I got was when I was 15 and it has now been expired longer then it was good for.
On the application one of things it asks for his travel plans. H and I have a general idea of where we will be going but we don't have anything booked, we don't have dates picked out, etc. Is approximations okay in this section? Or is a N/A acceptable? We would like to start traveling Internationally next year but nothing is set in stone so we are just preemptively applying.
Emergency contact: it asks for someone that will not be traveling with you. Does this need to be someone with a passport? Generally when I need a non-spouse ICE contact I put down my Dad or one of my brothers but none of them have passports. They couldn't get on a plane if needed but then again none of my close friends have passports either.

Nope, don't need set travel plans. I think last time I applied for my new one I just put "Africa" since I wasn't really sure specifically where we were going.
Emergency contact can be anyone. I'm pretty sure there are ways for your contact person to get an emergency passport in the event they need to travel to get to you.
