So I just got an email from my mom. Her phone got stolen tonight. I'm in from out of state visiting. Tonight, she leaves my hometown for DFW, where she has some kind of business shindig. I'll join her tomorrow on my way back to Louisiana. Great. So, she worked a 12 hour day, met my dad and I for a quick dinner, then drove the couple hours to DFW. She goes to what she thought was a relatively safe area to get a coke and use the bathroom, then continues on to her hotel (still another hour away).
She accidentally leaves her phone. She realizes this all of three blocks and five minutes away, turns around and comes back to the near-empty gas station. She asks about the phone. The attendants act clueless, but let her call from the store landline, then proceed to pretty much tell her that the phone is gone. As she gets in her car, she can see them laughing and high-fiving each other, which she thinks is weird, but onward.
Idiots. Thank God that thing was insured, had a good lock code that comes on automatically, and has now been both reported and had its service cut off. She's mad at herself, and my dad and I are both telling her that a) it's just a phone, and is replaceable and b)she was exhausted and this kind of crap happens to the best of us. It's not a personal reflection on her.
I hate that. I've had my purse stolen and it's pain and a half. Glad it was just her phone. And MCC is right, they had to have stolen it to react like that
I got a hold of my friend who used to run stores in that area. His advice was to ask the manager about it. They may not be able to see into the bathroom on the security camera footage, but they can see if anyone else came into the store after my mom, or if one of the attendants left the register between the time my mom left and the time she returned. At the least, it would narrow down the list of WTF did this.
