Yes. Waterproof or not, the mattress will still hold the pee smell in the outer layer. So much easier to be able to strip the bed and not worry about it.
We had a thick padded one for DS that washed really well and definitely kept the mattress from getting funky with pee smell.

yes. you might want a few of the flat (not fitted) waterproof pads. My sister said if the crib got wet at night, she didn't want to strip and change the whole bed so she'd lay down a fresh waterproof pad over the wet area and deal with it in the morning. I can't decide if that's gross or smart since you are so exhausted. I guess I'll find out for myself soon enough. lol
Yes. I've been told by numerous parents that getting a crib sheet/protector will come in handy in the middle of the night.
This.
Except, I'll expand on AlpineSlide - you can get a fitted waterproof cover but get two. And layer them - fitted cover, fitted sheet, fitted cover 2, fitted sheet 2.
That way, when the kid spits up or blows out his diaper at 3am, all you have to do is strip off the top 2 layers and put the kid back to bed. Voila.
We also would put down a very flat but absorbent burp cloth/blanket where B's head was. That way if he spit up a little bit we could just remove that and put another one down vs. having to wash the entire damn sheet set.
It's not fitted though. I hope that's not a problem. But I'm buying a zillion of them because of our lack of washer/dryer in our apartment so I want to have plenty on hand for explosions.
