Two of my cousins are moving to India today, as Missionaries. I know God isn't everyone's thing; that's cool. But some good thoughts as they travel today. They are going for a year.
If you're interested, they have a blog : Two for India
I'll definitely add my prayers to the mix! Hope the move goes smooth and they are able to have a great year of work & outreach. I'm sure it will be life-changing.
Sending them my T&Ps. You know that I will be checking in on their blog. They will have an amazing time. India is such an amazing place and they will truly get to experience the beauty of India if they approach the experience with an open mind and a positive attitude, which I'm sure they will.

They were there for a few weeks last year around Thanksgiving/Christmas.
I don't know a whole lot about their mission, or where in India they are going. They explained it to my Mom like this: There are 3 parts of India - The North, which doesn't accept Christianity AT ALL. The middle, which is so-so, and the South which accepts Christianity. Per my Mom, they are staying in the Northern part of the middle.. (did that make sense?)
Apparently they are helping with an orphanage, which only houses little boys.. According to what they told my Mom, it would be very dangerous to keep little girls there.. I don't know the exact reasoning for that --- I think ultimately their goal is to be able to have little girls in the orphanage.
I'm not totally sure on all of that - This was 3rd party from my Mom.

It will be interesting to follow for sure.
It looks like they are going to Nagpur, which is pretty much in the center of the country. I'm not sure about the acceptance of Christianity in different regions. H works with a guy from Calcutta (North India) who was raised Christian, but he may be an anomoly. In Chennai (South India), where we lived, there were Christian and Catholic churches, but Hinduism was definately most prevalent. There was a French colony in Tamil Nadu (the state that Chennai is in), so I would imagine that had an influence on the acceptance of Christianity in that region. I also know that Kerala (also South India) is skewed to Hinduism, but there are also significant populations, ~25% each, of Muslims and Christians. In the north, along the Pakistani border, I think the states tend to have a Muslim majority. I wonder what impact the already present/dominant religions in each region have on the tolerance for/acceptance of Christianity (or any other regligions)?
I wonder why the danger to have orphanages for girls? I'm going to try to read up on that later today because I'm super curious!

brit RE: the girls in orphanage.. I'm super unsure about this, but I want to say that they told my Mom it had something to do with the girls being sent to work; some sort of slavery (that is probably the wrong word). But I know she said they would have to hire a some sort of guard for the orphanage if they had girls there.
This might just be in whatever region they are in. I did some googling and see that there are all girl orphanages - So I'm not really sure.
Best of luck to them! My sister lives in India and loves it! She is Catholic and doesn't seem to have any issues with it. Then again, she is in a big city (Delhi).
