I'm not super active on gbcn but did some searching and couldn't find a thread on this topic.
Anyway. I received my test results and they are positive for lyme, yippeee . And even if I had the energy to exercise, I was told not to run during treatment. Which normally would be fine but I have a half I registered for in October. Has anyone had lyme and come back a-ok to running?
I've asked my doc follow-up questions but was hoping some real life experiences on exercising after lyme would lift my spirits as a google gorge has crushed them.
I don't have real life experience, but I had a friend in HS who had Lyme's disease and went back to being an awesome soccer player. I don't reacall how long it took for him to get back to 'normal' though. I'm sorry to hear that you're going through this and I hope you have a quick recovery.
My good friend had Lyme and it took a long time for her to get back to feeling normal - I'd say almost a year. I know this isn't what you want to hear and hopefully you'll recover quickly but I'd say a half in October is probably not enough time to recover and train.
One of my tri club friends has/had Lyme. She was actually dx'ed while she was pregnant with her last baby, which made the dx much more difficult. Oh, you're tired? Yes, you're pregnant. Since it was her 3rd, she knew something wasn't right, but getting doctors to really listen was hard.
Anyway, he's preschool age now, and she ran a full marathon last fall, and is training for another one this fall. This March she was hit by a car on her bike and was out for ... 6 weeks? with injuries, and STILL did the half ironman in June that we were all training for.
I'm not going to say it's always been easy or immediately gratifying, just that it's ultimately possible.
It was about a year for me, much of that time was treatment. It's been about 3 years now and for the most part I'm okay, although I still have episodes of very low energy. When they start to come on I focus on resting and after a week or two I get back to my normal routine It has been a long road, but I feel like myself most of the time now. Happy to answer any questions
tigerlily My doctor set up an appt with a rheumatologist and wants me to speak with them before starting anything beyond walking. I'm only on day 5 of the doxycycline and I swear the bottle is being refilled nightly by fairies. I've found on my google binging that your experience is similar to others.
I don't have any personal experience with lyme, but I know that Bart Yasso had lyme disease- twice- if I remember correctly. Bart is still an amazing runner. If you are a reader, "My Life on the Run" is a great book for any runner, but could also give you insight into how Bart dealt with lyme and running.
