Thanks for the advice I've gotten on here, it's been really helpful.
Anyway, I pushed myself a little too hard on a run on Monday and on Tuesday I had to stop fifteen minutes into my run because of a horrible sharp pain in my hip. I looked up some stretches for the area and have been sticking to the elliptical so it can heal. It's feeling better, it's still just a tiny bit sore. I'm a little nervous to run now. How long should I wait? Until it's absolutely not sore at all?
I've never had hip pain while running, or I should say pain that hurt enough to take some time off. Have you tried a short jog to see how it feels? I'm one to caution too much too soon, how long have you taken off?

I'd much rather be safe that sorry. I haven't tried jogging at all. I've stuck to hot yoga, the elliptical and lots of stretching since Tuesday. I was going to try jogging on Saturday.

i had brusitus before and it stemmed from my shoes
I think it really depends if you are hurt or if its just soreness. Usually if im just sore i make sure i still work out, it actually makes me feel better to work out

Everything points to brusitus. I've googled a few times and that's what I always come up with. i definitely don't think I'm hurt badly or anything, I'm just afraid of making it worse. I was fitted for running shoes about a month ago. God, I really hope it's not the shoes, I just paid $100 for them.

yes go back tot he running store, they will tell you what kind, actually tell them about your hip too, im pretty sure they will recc the inserts!! I wear the superfeet blue, im not sure what you will need
Also, my friend is a podiatrist that is a runner and specializes in running injuries, she also gave me these tiny little inserts that go right under teh ball of your foot, i was like NO WAY WILL THESE help, and sure enough, it was incredible, a tiny little tweak can do wonders, ill see if i can find them online....i forget, but superfeet are just as great
Hip issues can often come on because of hip and core weakness while running. I would make sure you are icing regularly and you may want to get your running gait analyzed if it continues. I wouldn't rush into orthotics right away, particularly if someone already looked at your gait and recommended those shoes. Do you run on domed roads? This is also a very common cause. You may just need to switch up where you run.
Ditto hannahb. Start strengthening that core and work on flexibility. If you don't have one, buy a foam roller and start using it. I would not rush into orthotics. Sometimes they cause injuries.

I just wanted to add that I'm here with you also having hip bursitis. I haven't quite found the answer yet. I've had at least 2 weeks off of running, which has helped. I swim and lift weights and actually I started feeling a lot better once I started lifting some weights. It might have just been the day I was going to start feeling better or something. I iced for the first few days and have stretched a ton every day since. I think mine got so bad because I kept trying to run hard right through the pain. I didn't realize it was inflammation and thought it was just soreness. The stretch that has helped the most is one where you stand in a doorway and cross one leg behind and lean to one side.
I mostly run on the treadmill at no incline. I run outside once, rarely twice a week- no hills. It maybe be my core. I did a lot of circuit training and have recently taken up yoga and consider myself pretty strong but am probably lacking in my core a bit. I'm pretty flexible as it is, actually very flexible. It may be my gait or it may be my core. Thanks for the input.
so how did you make out? Did you go to the running store??
Nope. I tried just jogging for awhile and on Thursday couldn't go a minute without the pain coming back. I'm fucked, lol. I need to take a few weeks off and let it heal. In the meantime, I'm going to strength train and I'll go to the running store and see what they have. I'm actually really bummed out right now and just want to put it out of my mind. I'm feeling pretty discouraged.

...sent from my Jedi mind
Hey, can you walk me through this? I googled and couldn't find it.

Found it. It says to stretch to one side, but I stretch both sides. I also do the stretch pictured, but not described, at the top of the page (the one where you grab your foot and pull it toward your butt, the common runner stretch.) And I do the laying down, bend both knees and twist them to your left while keeping everything straight, switch. Pretty much anything that makes it feel good I do, but the stretch below has seemed to help the most. I do it between laps in the pool, too.
The outer thigh stretch lengthens the iliotibial band and outer glutes. The "IT" band starts at the hip and runs down the side of the thigh. This stretch is performed with the aid of a wall. While standing with your right side facing the wall, place your hand on it at about shoulder-height. Move your right leg behind your body and toward your left side, and place your right foot on the floor next to your left foot. Keeping your back straight, bend your elbow and lean in toward the wall. You will feel a stretch on your right hip at this point. Hold for 20 to 30 seconds, slowly release and switch sides. When doing this stretch, keep the majority of your weight on your non-stretching side. For example, if you are stretching your right side, place your weight on your left foot.
It's been 3.5 weeks since my last race and I have not run since. I have been swimming and lifting weights. I went for a 2 mile fast walk the other day and it didn't hurt my hips! I got a little bit of shin splints or I would have tried jogging a bit today.
So I'd say it took med 3.5 weeks but I'm pain free right now. Good luck!

Awe man sorry you are in pain. Not fun. I m glad you are taking a rest and break. Get yourself inserts for when you do start again. So you don't have to go through this again. Feel better!!!!

Thank you so much! I really appreciate it.
yeah, I definitely have to let it rest. Even though everyone was saying a few weeks to heal, I somehow didn't think that applied to me, lol. It does!
