I have one that I use to cut the edges of the yard that I can't get the riding mower around. I wouldn't use it for my whole yard because it gets jammed with sticks a lot, and like others have said it doesn't do well with tall pieces. I usually end up yanking them out by hand. I like it for what I use it for instead of having to deal with a pushmower. I think it's a Scott's brand from Home Depot.
I used to. I was more comfortable using that kind of mower than a gas-powered lawn mower.
Advantages:
- It's good exercise - They are less expensive (I got mine from Lowes, I think it was about $100) - Takes up less room in your garage/shed - You don't have to worry about putting gas in it, checking the oil, spark plugs, etc...it just works - You can mow early in the morning when it's cool out and not wake up your neighbor - It's better for the environment because there are no emissions
Disadvantages:
- It's hard work and takes longer to mow the same amount of grass - It mulches the grass (maybe an advantage?) -- there is no way to bag it unless you like raking - It's super-hard if you wait until the grass gets really long. Like nearly impossible. - The blades do get dull eventually, and you'll either have to get them sharpened or get a new mower. It's harder than just replacing the blades on a normal gas-powered mower.
Definitely pricier than a manual, push mower. DH wanted one of these for a long time, then he really thought about how much effort it would take the mow the lawn. Now he wants an electric one. Only real drawback besides price is they don't hold a charge for terribly long, so I think that can get annoying if you have a really large yard.
Pros: -Quiet, I could mow at midnight and nobody would care. -Exercise (a little...it's not that hard to push)
Cons: -Doesn't mow down dandelions or other thicker stemmed leaves -Need to walk briskly to start to cut, so not good for angular yards or curved areas -Once the blades get dull, it is cheaper to buy a new mower than to get them sharpened (this why I bought a corded electric).
My yard is laughably small, I didn't want to deal with charging a battery, so I bought a corded electric mower (essentially a vacuum cleaner with blades). It is sooo much easier to mow the lawn now, even with the cord. My only complaint is the cord I bought is a little short so I need to get a new one so I don't have to unplug and replug to go from back yard to front.
