Does anyone have any recommendations for swim gear for a new swimmer? I know how to swim, but I just joined a gym with a pool and would like to start swimming laps. I've been checking out swimoutlet.com for some inexpensive gear, but I am kind of overwhelmed at this point. I need a suit and goggles for sure. Any recommendations on brands? I'd like to keep it fairly cheap since I don't know how dedicated I will be. I appreciate any guidance/words of swimming wisdom you ladies can provide!

To start all you need is a bathing suit, a swim cap, and goggles. I order from swim outlet all the time. I like the tyr grab bag suits. I don't care what they look like and have always gotten cute prints. I like the sporti brand silicone swim cap and their goggles aren't too bad either. The cap and goggles are personal preference and everyone here will recommend different ones.
I have speedo vanquisher goggles and a silicone speedo cap that were both recommended here.
My first suit was a cheapo sporti one from swimout, it was $20 or something. I sort of hated how it fit me though, and now i have a few tyr durafast suits that i love. I never thought to get e grab bag prints from swimoutlet, hmmm....
You don't need anything fancy. A cheap suit, cap, and goggles will be fine. I suggest buying a few caps as they can tear. It's nice to have a backup. You may have to try different pairs of goggles to see what you like best, but anything will do for now. Enjoy!
P.S. That is all you need. Don't worry about things like fins, pull buoys, etc. Those are for later!
I would recommend going to a swim shop and trying on goggles. I had a hard time finding a pair that worked because some of them would hit near my eyebrows and not seal properly. I liked being able to try on different styles and see what i liked better. For a suit, I went to kohls and bought a nike swimsuit top to wear with the black bottoms I already owned. I just needed something more sporty and less "cleavage-y" And I really like the cheap caps - they are super stretchy and haven't torn on me, yet my husbands more expensive silicon one tore the first day.
