It's not really any more of a pain than traveling at other times of the year. Maybe a little longer in the security line? You're more likely to have to park in remote parking. We travel pretty much every year for one or the other. All of our family is out of state so we're constantly going somewhere.

Thanksgiving is a PITA for us. H has to work the day before and Black Friday, so he only gets Thurs. off. Our family is 2.5 hours away and the past two years, we have driven up and back on Thanksgiving day. It has been such a whirlwind and honestly, not even that fun because we are so rushed. I hate driving back at night when we are both tired and stuffed from two dinners.
Not sure what we will do this year because we have the dog. I would be up for hosting my parents and my ILs at our house, but my grandparents can't travel and we always do TGiving dinner with them too, so I would be sad to not be with them. It's just getting too hard for us to do it though.

H and I never travel for Thanksgiving or Christmas. It's too expensive and an all around PITA. We welcome people to visit us, though. We are bratty like that.
ETA: For many years, we did travel for holidays and one year we decided we'd had enough. I should add that we have to fly to visit any of our family.

I'd be okay either way. We don't actually celebrate Thanksgiving as a family. DH refuses to because that's about when his dad dies. It's a hard day for him.
Usually he works, and the kids and I plan a menu and cook together. Sometimes we go to my dad's.
It's honestly not as bad as you anticipate - no worse than any other time. The security lines would be the worst part, but if you don't have to worry about that - it should be fine. For 3 years, I travelled from DCA to IAH on Tuesday or Wednesday before T'giving and back on the Monday after and had no problems. (I also got upgrades b/c the higher level business travelers were not traveling).
They implemented the 3-3-3 liquid rule right before T'giving. They had all these warnings to get to the airport super early that week. So I got to DCA 2 hours before my flight to IAH - and found NO security line, but a packed bar of people who did the same thing I did.
Every other year, we do a trip to Florida with H's family for Thanksgiving. There are 11 of us and we rent a big home in Cape Coral for two weeks. It's nice to get away for a bit and the house has a great kitchen for preparing the meal.
Now that sound pretty nice! I could do that- travel to a little vacation for Thanksgiving.
We are staying home for Thanksgiving. We also may be staying home for Christmas. We usually go "home", but it's like 13 hours away, and we are pretty sick of that drive.

If you never travel for the holidays then how do you know that it's terrible?
Some of it may also depend on your airport. DFW is a breeze to fly out of. O'Hare's security lines are a nightmare. Just plan for more time for whatever you are doing and you should be fine. If you tend to be an impatient person or hate crowds or the like then it's probably not the best.

My family is 2.5 hours away from H and I as well. H has to work the day after TDay as well... in accounting. We don't travel though. A snowy pass is in between us and them so it can easily turn into 5+ hours one way.
I've traveled several times during Thanksgiving and it's been my experience that the night before is usually quiet at our international airport--the Sunday after can be a madhouse. Around Christmas is when traveling gets nightmarish and I refuse to do it.

We do Thanksgiving with my family. My ILs are both deceased and DH's siblings each do their own thing with their families. Fortunately, we all live in the same area, so travel isn't an issue.
Ticket prices to Aspen are insane no matter what. The Thanksgiving flights are about $50 more, so not a big deal.
If everyone is cool with the price, it sounds like fun. We've tried a couple of times to get my family to Breck for Thanksgiving and the overall travel cost was too much for them.
