Just in case you are on the fence about the vaccine.
DD's best friend's nanny tested positive while hospitalized for breathing trouble. Little best friend is now on prophylactic pertussis treatment. I sent a quick message to her pedi and said I'd be watching DD in case she got symptoms. We've received *5* follow up calls over two days. (I explain DD and lbf are both asymptomatic). When I thanked them for thorough service, she mentioned they are seeing a lot of cases.
This county was the hotbed for the outbreak three years ago when it went national. I've seen recent news articles about it cropping up in at least 8 states (here in the SF bay area, Texas, NC, Florida, Colorado, Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin).
Is the vaccine not part of the normal childhood vaccine programme in the US? Or is there poor uptake of it, leaving the most vulnerable (small infants) at greater risk?

No, it is. But there are some morons who don't vaccinate their kids. Also, some adults may be overdue for their booster and give it to an infant who has not yet been vaccinated.

There's a huge outbreak of measles in NL right now, thanks to the religious freaks who think vaxing is 'acting like you know better than God' (as heard on tv). I'm scares shitless.
Only good thing is that it gives me a reason to stay the eff away from my brother's GF who I really really dislike. She comes from a religious anti vax family, so she's not welcome around me or LO until at least Jan 2015.

Also, in NL they don't update/give boosters foe TDaP after age 4 or 8. I happened to get a booster because the US demanded it for a visa a few years ago, so I'm likely much better protected (and so will my baby be) than most Dutch (pregnant) women and infants.
I can't get TDAP for medical reasons and we're right next to one of NC's crunchy non-vax epicenters where pertussis is making a comeback. I'm kind of scared shitless about it at the moment.

*sigh*
I just know this is going to be a fight with DH's family. I know it. God knows when/if they've had boosters, and honestly, I have one SIL who may or may not vaccinate her kids. I really don't know.
DH and I were just discussing how they're going to expect us to bring the baby to the family reunion a in mid-September, and how we weren't comfortable doing that. I will likely use this as the reason to skip. People will have to get over it.

sonrisa you're in the Bay right?? So glad I got my vax while pregnant and DH is up to date on his too. I'll need to check with other people though...I'm sure they'll all think I'm nuts.
How do you even begin to bring this up with people?? Like "Oh if you're not vaxed don't bother coming..." bleh.

The kids at greatest risk of death are newborns. For that reason, many US OBs are giving boosters to women in their 3rd trimester so the baby has some immunity by the time of birth. They are recommending it even for pregnany women who have had a booster within the past few years.

When does baby get the tdap vax? Or do they?
Yes - Marin. Pertussis for all! The grandparents got them before the last baby - 2010 - which was the last big outbreak here.

I'm really annoyed my OB says that I can't get it because its been less than 2 years. He really should be on top of the CDC recs. I was going to bring the CDC recs with me to my next appt, but I think I'm just going to call his office this week and be like "I need to get this vaccine. Where do I go to get it done?"
There has been a huge outbreak in my area of SE Michigan. My OB wants me to get the vaccine even though I had it a few years ago(I think 5). We'll need to get it for H too.
My boys have had 2 rounds if prophylactic antibiotic treatments in the last two years for exposure to positive classmate. In both cases, the positive student was properly vaccinated.
This one relies so much on high vax rates to work for a community because it's not effective for every individual.
