I am thinking about taking swimming lessons through our community center and I need opinions:
The options are (with descriptions from book):
Adult beginner: For those who have never swan before and have a fear of the water. Focus on becoming comfortable in and around the water.
Adult Intermediate: For those that are able to swim front and back crawl independently in the water; class will assist with form and techniques on various strokes.
I'm not sure which I should take. I don't have a fear of water. I can tread water and doggy paddle. I just don't like water that is over my head since I am not a strong swimmer. However, I'm not sure what a front and back crawl is and since I don't I probably can't do them independently. I feel like I am probably at a level somewhat in between these classes. I don't want to take beginner and get nothing out of it/waste the money but I also don't want to take something that is above my skill level.
I would say the first one. Not liking being in water over your head is one of the fears they will address. Stroke improvement is generally for people who can pass a deep water test (which would include swimming a lap or two, treading in deep water and jumping into the deep end) Good luck! It's great you are taking this step!
Totally agree with al320 - I would call and verify. My guess would be that the beginner class would be best, since you don't know the strokes quite yet to qualify for the intermediate class. Since the beginner class works on being comfortable in the water, it may be really valuable in helping you feel better about water that is over your head.
Thanks for the opinions! People can never believe that I reached the age of 28 without knowing how to swim. I think it is time if for no other reason then to ENJOY swimming with H on vacations instead of sticking to the shallow end or hanging out at the edge.

Good for you! My H is 32 and doesn't know how to swim. He's going to start lessons, too, because I've finally roped him into doing a sprint next June
