My kids love Wii and so do I because it gets them off the sofa and moving. We are thinking of getting them a Wii for Christmas. Is there is any other system we should be considering? The goal is family friendly games, minimum required game purchases after the fact (no need for individual game purchases), and a good interactive system that keeps them moving.
Yeah, the Wii is probably your best option. I found it to be easy to use, very difficult to mess up (my daughter likes to mess with the settings on the PS3, it's really quite easy to access.), and has a lot of good family games. The Mario series alone will keep them occupied and active.
Have you considered the Wii U? It is more or less an upgraded version of the Wii.
When I was talking to some others, they seemed to think that I wouldn't want the Wii U. What are the upgraded features?
The main difference is the Wii U has the game pad, which allows a player to interact with the game in a different manner. The exact function of the pad various from game to game.
The rest of the features are comparatively minor. They're things like better graphics, it supports 5 players instead of 4, etc.

I really like the Wii U. The tablet is really cool and personally I never liked the Wiimote controls - the tablet is much easier for me. But you can't go wrong with the Wii either- you should be able to find one for really cheap, plus LOTS of used games out there.
