I was out working in my flower beds this afternoon. I decided I wanted to dig up this ornamental grass plant to move to the back yard. I'm digging and fishing around trying to get it up then low and behold my hand touches a SNAKE. I was so freaked out I couldn't even scream. It was coiled up half sticking out from under a landscaping rock.
Oh god, that's scary! I hate that feeling of being so scared I can't breathe/scream/etc. Sorry you had to go through that.
I recently read a story about a signing teacher in our area who has a 2yo nephew who lives in Arizona. His Mom was away from him for a bit and heard him screaming in the backyard when he was playing and saw that he his finger was bleeding and he was signing "snake" frantically. Apparently a baby rattlesnake bit him, eep! They rushed him to Children's hospital and gave him antivenom doses and he was fine, but if he hadn't signed "snake" he probably wouldn't have made it. Scared the shit out of me bc we have rattles in CA and I've seen a few of them while walking around. Eep!

Oh my that would scare me too! (And I live in Australia!) just for the recorded I haven't seen any snakes in the wild here and if I did I would freak out.
I called my city boy husband and he had no advice. Lol
So then, I called my dad 3,000 miles away and described it to him. I sprayed it with the hose so it stuck its head out. He said he was 99.9% sure it wasn't poisonous. The crazy thing is he had to kill a copperhead in their yard just last week! He walked out of his office and nearly stepped right on it.
I just checked on the snake. It's still there. I was brought up not to kill anything unless I'm going to eat it or it is dangerous. So I don't really want to kill it. I'm hoping my H can scoop it up with a shovel and put it in the yard of the house next door( it's abandoned). Gah! I have no clue why but I never imagined running into a snake in my New York yard!
I know Trudy that's what is blowing my mind! I never imagined! I'm currently sitting on the front stoop somewhat giggling at my H trying to catch it. It went into a patch of irises. Oh boy.
So DH came home and it was still there. Like two idiots we were out there with a shovel, flashlight and bucket. He moved the rock and It slithered off. We couldn't find it. How am I going to plant my flowers tomorrow so I'm not judged on my ugly flower beds ?! Lol
Hah, yup! I used to name the garden snakes when I was little and went and said hi to them every day. Now if this post was about a spider I would be having nightmares tonight. Fears are so weird...

There's a picture of 6 year old me holding a garter snake. My fear is bees. I can handle spiders and snakes, but I can't do bees.

Ahhh that is so awful. I stepped on a garter snake barefoot in our backyard a couple of years ago and I was the same way--couldn't even scream. I hope you've recovered!
