She's having an awful allergy flare up and we can't seem to get it under control. She has a bunch of gross bleeding hot spots from the licking. They put her on a strong antihistamine and prednisone. The antihistamine seems to work bc her dandruff has decreased a lot, but she keeps licking the hot spots bc they hurt (I think).
I put the cone of shame on her, cleaned the spots and put on neosporin. We'll call the vet tomorrow about maybe antibiotics? Anyone have experience with hot spots? TrudyCampbell I think you said one of your dog gets them? The allergies seem to be seasonal bc they're gone during the winter and not so bad in the fall and spring.

My dog used to get them seasonally and then it evolved into basically all of the time so we just have him on a daily steroid. He's on Temaril-P (spelling might be a little off) and the dosage varies. We tryyy to get him to 1/2 tablet every other day but he's usually on 1/2 per day. Then when he seems to be getting a hot spot we increase the dose to a full pill per day for a couple of days until it subsides. And I know when we first started we did like a week on 2 pills a day and then we tapered down as far as he could tolerate. We saw a dog dermatologist (only in NY, haha) and she was great if you are interested. She was at NYC Vet Specialists and she was French but I can't remember her name.
It will ultimately shorten his life to be on long term steroids but he is sooo much happier to not be itchy. We also tried about 10000 other medications before this one.

Oh, and my other dog randomly got a HORRIBLE hot spot about a year ago, I think due to a bug bite, and he had to be on antibiotics. It got SO BAD. It was so deep, OMG.
Thanks for this website! I tried the apple cider vinegar today and I've only done it twice but already her sores seem less oozing! She smells like vinegar, but honestly, she smelled anyway, so whatevs

Our dog has severe allergies (year-round) and has been to the dog dermatologist. She's also had acupuncture ( ) and been on a Chinese herb regimen for allergies in the past! For the record the acupuncture helped! It was just very frequent and very expensive...
Sorry to hear about Suzy's issues rjamz. We have had luck with a medicated shampoo and conditioner that we use on our dog (Sebazole and ResiKetoChlor). Our poor pup lived in a cone of shame and tshirt for about a year before we found a drug that works for her. It's an immunosupressant called Atopica. Expensive, but a miracle drug! She's also on Prozac, which may or may not impact her itchiness, but it can only help! She has anxiety about pretty much everything and it mellows her out a tiny bit.
