Usually, it's at the beginning of the summer, but it got delayed. I thought I had missed it this year, but there's time! I'm doing a shirt design that has a lot of small components so that I can do it little by little, during nap times.
Decorating not your thing? I feel like a lot of the really good entries on Threadcakes are by non bakers. People that are good with clay and the like, and they just make a box cake.
I want to learn how to use fondant so I can try this one year. I know mine wouldn't even come close to being as good as yours, but it would be fun.
I like to use marshmallow fondant. It's a lot easier to make, and if you microwave it for a tiny bit, it becomes nice and pliable, without kind of drying out like some fondant does.

Where do you get it? Just baking stores? Is it pricey?

I make it. It takes: a bag of mini marshmallows, ~ 2lb bag of powdered sugar, and 2 tablespoon of water.
I to the beginning of the mixing in my stand mixer, with the paddle attachment, so save my hands, because I have not so awesome wrists. I do the final kneading by hand, though.

Thanks! I'll have to come up with a reason to decorate a cake and try it. I usually only decorate Abby's (and now Caleb's) birthday cakes, but maybe I'll make and decorate one for my own birthday, just for the practice.
