Anyone have a good tip besides taking drugs? I can't sleep lately. The other night, I was so desperate I took Benadryl. It made me really dizzy. It felt freaky and I was so groggy the next morning. Luckily, DH took care of Evan because I had a hard time waking up. Safe to say I won't be doing that again!

DH used to take an herb pill that helped him relax, if you want I can ask him what it is.
For if I have a hour or so of relaxing before bed it really helps. For example I might take a long bath, then sip a cup of tea, read a book then go to sleep.
Cut out caffeine if you haven't already. Easier said than done, but it's a vicious cycle. I also listen to sleep tracks as I'm trying to fall asleep. Pzizz is a good app - it's a little weird, but it's designed to get your brainwaves in the right mode for sleep.

I second exercise. I have a really hard time falling asleep at night but I find when I work out I can fall asleep so much easier and actually sleep better. I also had to cut out all caffeine (even chocolate) after 12pm. I made the mistake of having a chocolate coated ice cream bar the other night before bed and I was up tossing and turning until 2.
I'm big on trying natural things before turning to meds (though I take no issue with meds and will turn to them when needed). Drink your water, go for a walk about an hour before bed, use the last hour in the day to unwind quietly, go to bed at a decent hour, don't do anything mentally active in your bed / bedroom (like watch tv or read - do that stuff in another room so your bed is associated with sleep), avoid alcohol before bed, if you wake in the night resist looking at the clock, if your mind is reeling with a to-do list, try to remember that you can't do anything about it at night and visualize locking those thoughts up in a safe to be dealt with at another time. That's what works for me.

Melatonin, Valerian root, chamomile tea, magnesium supplementation, hot bath and calm reading before bed. Also exercise during the day, but not in the evening.
(I however rely on various combos of the above plus pharmaceuticals. It sucks.)

I also remembered a technique the psychiatrist gave me. If you are staying awake because you are worrying about things, this might work for you. Keep a pad of paper and a pen next to your bed. Write down everything you are worrying about, and then give yourself permission to worry about it tomorrow instead of right then.
