I hate when I'm defensive and feel like I have to prove myself. Or something, I don't know. I hate playground one upping!!
We were at one of the nicer playgrounds in the neighborhood. Jack was playing next to another little boy. His mom said she liked Jack's shorts and asked where I bought them. I told her Old Navy. She said, "Oh, I don't shop there." I thought maybe she was saying that she didn't realize ON might have cute boy stuff since boys clothes suck and her kid was in a babyish outfit. I said that sometimes they have cute stuff for boys as does H&M and the GAP. She kind of scoffed and said, "Oh, I don't shop at those places either." I asked where she shopped. Mini Boden and J&J.
Instead of just being all ok, cool, I was all, "Oh, I shop there too. They have some great stuff. I buy things that I want to last awhile at those stores but I buy cheaper every day clothes at Gap." She kind of ignored me after that. I wanted to point out that Jack's shirt was Petite Bateau and Henry was in a Ralph Lauren polo and shorts (Marshalls Oh yeah!) but then I would have been an insecure lame trying to impress snobby playground moms person. Ugh.
ETA: Ok, so I think I worded the first sentence wrong. I am totally happy with my clothing choices for the boys. I think I was just surprised at the bitchiness and was caught off guard. Which made me feel like she was judging me. I wish I had had the clarity to say, "well, good for you. I can afford those clothes too, I just don't care to buy them. Andplusalso you are a snobby bitch and that outfit is ugly, bye!"
This is the point at which you know you don't want to be friends with/keep talking to this person. Her response right there tells you everything you need to know about her personality. Those are carefully chosen words that are not the same as "Cute! I had no idea they had great boy stuff."
I'm sorry you felt bad, but anyone who says something like that out loud in this circumstance is just a bitch.
claralou You are right. I am usually pretty distracted trying to keep track of 2 climbing toddlers. I should have realized her tone was more snotty than inquisitive.
@gisa, we don't even have a Kohls within a 45 minute drive. Can you imagine if I had told her that I went to the SUBURBS to buy their clothes? Or that some of their clothes are from Target?!! The horror!

I'm not saying you should have picked up on that. You've got plenty to keep an eye on:) I'm just saying that you shouldn't let a twat like that make you feel bad. Hugs.
Good grief! She'd definitely have a problem with E's clothes. They are 50% consignment sales and 50% clearance rack specials from ON, Walmart, Kohl's, and Macy's. I think the most expensive thing I've ever bought him was his $22 Christmas outfit.
If you said something about college funds she'd probably be all... oh we have 400,000 saved for him already. Then you would just have to throat punch her, grab your boys, pull the j&j shirt off her toddler and run!

@gisa Why can I never tag you?! I wish there was a Kohls nearby. I hear such awesome deals people have scored there. We just have Target, which I love.
I can't help but imagine that women like this, and the one at rjamz playground must be very insecure, lonely people with nothing but their own delusional, self righteous rage to keep them company. It's kind of sad when you think about it.
The other day my DCP was going on about how Macy has such cute clothes all the time and all of her clothes are from Carter's even!! I was like is that a good thing?? She seemed to think Carter's was very top of the line. Although I guess it is expensive if you pay full price.

My boys wear maybe 85% hand me downs from our friends/family with little boys, that lady would have thought I was the devil. Fuck her and the horse she rode in on. I'd rather save my money for more important things.

That's ridiculous! I think as long as the kid is taken care of, is clean and the mom attempts clean clothes who gives a shit where they are from. Christian has clothes from a variety of places including consignment and Walmart.

Lol she'd faint at what I put Hank in. Walmart and he lived to tell the tale! I find even Gap to be a bit too pricey considering the way Hank treats his clothes like one giant napkin! The sales are only ok here in Canada.

Totally agree.
You should see the kids in our area, they are decked out in grown-up mini-labels. You know like the kids' line of $$$ adult stores? I would name labels but you guys wouldn't know them, being aussie. But designer stuff.

Yep, I am happy at all times to take whatever clothing (for the most part, certina styles like Camo is NMS) is given to me. My mom finds some cute items at walmart. I will pretty much only buy a few 'nice' things each year for holidays. I am so grateful to my Bff and SIL who pass down such nice items to me. Just last night I went through BFF's bin of passed down size 5s for Adam, the stuff is in such perfect condition and saves me so much money, woo hoo.
Phew, she'd have a hard time with me! Probably about 50-75% of Maggie's clothes are from Mom2Mom sales. Saturday I spent about $50 and came home with two bulging tote bags. A couple weeks ago I spent $19 and had one bulging tote. And I also get constant compliments on her outfits, but maybe she's just that cute
Oh yeah, and we have pretty much no college fund, lol.
eta: And the rest is usually Carter's and ON clearance!
I never think of good retorts in the moment, but how can she not care about the environment? And how wasteful it is to buy *brand new* everything. Consignment sales are so much better for the planet, geez.
