I completed my first powerlifting meet two weeks ago and thought I'd share the story. Until I started crossfit 1.5 years ago, I was terribly out of shape and had never touched a barbell in my life (not even in high school gym). I enjoyed crossfit, especially the heavier lifting days that didn't involve overhead movements. Our box started a powerlifting club that trained together and I joined. I enjoyed it so much, I ended up leaving my gym to follow my trainer when he left. So I worked as a beginner last October, to competing in my first event this month.
There were only 3 women who competed in the full power meet and each of us belonged to separate weight classes so I automatically won my weight class. I finished 2nd total (the winner outweighed me by about 140 lbs). I did 250 squat, 285 deadlift (I was disappointed because I've previously hit 300), 120 bench....at body weight 144. It was exciting and exhausting and I was extremely nervous to lift on a platform in front of an entire room of spectators. Everyone I met was super supportive and seemed excited to have women participating (it was the first meet for all 3 women).
My goal before the next meet is to drop to the next weight class (under 132) and participate there. I'm only a little over 2 years from the masters age group (40) and think I can be competitive if I drop weight classes and keep training until I'm the youngest in the masters group (instead of the oldest in the general group).
Pic with the team I train with (I'll remove the pic later if I even figured out how to add it correctly). I'm the short brunette.
That's really cool! I don't know anyone who does that so your story is all new to me.
I didn't know anyone who did it either until our little group started. Now that I'm in it, I find out its a huge sport and only getting larger participation now because crossfit boxes are good intros to lifting for people like me.
