I'm going to go get a pedicure tomorrow, and I think I'm going to splurge on a manicure. I don't want fake nails or anything, just pretty nails. I have never had a manicure and haven't worn nail polish in about 8 years. Is it worth it or should I attempt to paint my own nails?

Totally worth it. They do more than just paint your nails! They spruce up your nail bed, trim and shape them, massage your hands and arms, and my place dips them in wax so they are super soft afterwards. I agree you should go with gel. You work with your hands so its be silly not to get gel!
I like a manicure for everything but the polish! They make your nails nice and even, fix your cuticles and give you a hand/arm massage. The only polish I'll get is clear or gel because otherwise it chips in like 2 days.
Eh, I like them but my nails chip within a day so I'm normally cheap and don't get them. But if you get Shellac that will last for 2 weeks. So I would splurge on that if you can.

Totally worth it! It is only a couple dollars more to get a manicure when you get a pedicure at the place I go. My place is normally really good Andy polish will last up to a week.

This. I like how my hands look, but then they chip. I'd either get the gel or spend more on the pedicure (I usually upgrade to a "spa pedicure" where they massage my feet longer and put different stuff on my legs)
I still can't see myself with nail polish on from working back of house. Manicures are nice for what they do to your hands, though.
The only reason I'm doing it is because I have 6 days off! I figure it will be the only time in the near future I'll have the chance to do it, as it will be off my the time I go back to work.
