DH and I are taking a little trip to Montreal at the end of September. We will be there for 3 days/nights. We have plans to eat bagels and go to a concert on Saturday night. Other than that we're open to anything you can suggest. We are staying at Le Westin, which is right off the river downtown.

Definitely go to Old Montreal. Fun to walk around and see the shops, and some good restaurants (I don't remember the names- we did eat some really good poutine down by the waterfront). Mont Royal is very nice, Molson has it's brewery there. Have fun!

DH and I visited Montreal in July and had a great time. We had terrific meals at Napoleon (upscale old world French) and Osteria Venti (Italian) which were both in the old section. We also went to La Banquise for poutine (you must try this when there!). This was a bit away from the downtown/old section but still easily enough accessible by public transportation. We had poutine another time at a place called Montreal Poutine which was in the old section.
As for sights, we did some randoms things but I would highly recommend visiting Notre Dame Cathedral. The interior is amazing! We thought about taking a bateau mouche (boat ride) but ran out of time.
Here's a link to a blog post on one of the restaurants (other blog post links are included):
Dinner at Au Pied de Cochon (make reservations ASAP if you want to go)
Canadiens hockey game
poutine at La Banquise (24 hours)
Biodome
Saint Joseph's Oratory
Breakfast at The Sparrow
Juliet et Chocolat for hot cocoa and sweets
really good craft beer at Dieu du Ciel
Jean Talon Market
ETA: sorry, just realized you said end of September. The Canadiens might not be playing by then. But supposedly the guided tour of the Bell Centre is good. If you're a hockey fan then I would definitely get up there at some point for a game if you can. The crowd is SO into it.
Old Montreal is a nice stroll, as is Mont Royal Park. Get a Metro pass because driving & parking are a PITA. There's a suprisingly authentic South Indian/Sri Lankan place near the Plamondon metro station called Thanjai.
