Did you decide on vinyl (because you'll be buying them again and doubling your cost anyway in 15 years if you did...)? Also, we got two estimates for new "old" windows, one was half the other, so there may be a difference there. OK, I'll just have to not open your door/window posts anymore because I can't stand it! One final piece of advice, if you have the space anywhere in an attic, basement, shed, wherever, save the old sashes. You never know.
I can't get across tone on here; I'm really not trying to be an a$$hole. Just making sure you're sure.
I don't remember your original post as Juno seems to. Can you give some more info? What kind of windows are they currently? What type of siding does your house have? Why are you getting new doors and windows? Are you trying to replace them all at once? Where in the country do you live (give a rough location if your not OK giving the state)?
We're replacing all of our windows over time. Our old windows were not salvageable and we're moving a lot of walls so different style and size windows were needed. I did a ton of research and decided on Marvin Ultimates for the whole house with two fiberglass ones in the master bath (to avoid condensation issues). We love the wood aluminum clad Ultimate ones and are OK with the fiberglass ones. I would strongly suggest against vinyl for a number of reasons.
Let me page you tonight with my links/info; I'm at work and can't spend much time on here (shouldn't spend any!). Foxinfiji has good knowledge on modern windows and what will/won't last and will/won't save you money energywise. If you must replace, listen to her
What about putting vinyl in now and over a few years refinishing/ fixing the originals? Then by the time the vinyl need replaced you'll have the other ones ready? * knows nothing about windows*
