Is it rude to go into my local Starbucks or Trader Joe's and use the restroom if I really need to? Do you plan a loop that runs back home? I live/run in a super busy residential area, so popping a squat is not an option.

I do my long runs on a trail. There's a portapotty at the beginning, but that's it. I guess I would go off in the woods if I had to, but honestly, I've made it through 3 HMs and all the training for them without ever having to stop to go.
There is a hotel in our downtown that I use the lobby restroom in. On my other frequent route I divert my run through a neighborhood under construction and use the portapotty at the construction site.
My town has closed all of the park bathrooms for some reason.
I have different options depending on the route. My runs near my house I'll loop back home or go into the park bathroom if it is open. For trail runs there is usually a porta potty near parking areas so I'll go there. For long runs on the C&O, I run half in one direction and half in the other, so my mid point is by the bathroom again. That also helps my uneasiness of being up to 10 miles away from my car. I live in the boonies now, so no Starbucks or fast food, but I'd definitely stop there if it was an option. I usually don't have peeing emergencies, but I'd absolutely go in the woods if I had to. I did quite a bit when I was pregnant. Sometimes I'd stop twice in a mile, lol.
I used to stop at corner stores or fast food places. Now I plan my routes to where I swing by my house every 6-8 miles to refill my water bottle and go then if I need to, although I usually don't.
I stop at the pro shop on the golf course or the library. BUT...I have to time it right - they both are within a mile of each other, so better not have to go before then or afterwards. I also refill my fuel belt bottles at their water fountains....

I don't usually have to go on my long runs. If I have to go and I'm in the city, I'll run into a gas station or fast food place. Most of my runs are out in the country, so I'll just try to hide behind something on the side of the road and hope a car doesn't come!
I run on the nature trails around my house, and plan my loop to be near Starbucks at the beginning, as I always need a bathroom around then. They've never said a word about it!
Love of my life baby boy born 11/11. One and done not by choice; 3 years of TTC yielded 4 MMC and 2 CPs, through 4 IUIs and 2 IVFs. Focusing on making the world a better place instead...and running.
We plan routes that go through parks with restrooms, fast food places, grocery stores, etc. Over time we've found which ones are friendly to runners and which ones to avoid. I always carry some cash on a long run in case we need to stop at an "untested" location and find that restrooms are for customers only.
I will try and make it to a Starbucks or McDonald's but I've also been known to duck behind dumpsters, large bushes, little wooded areas. I have no shame. Actually when that story came out about the runner in New Mexico, my friend called me asking when I went there (a joke of course...I think)
Ok, then I won't feel bad going into our local SBux/TJs to use the bathroom. I just didn't know if this was really rude running etiquette or not. I haven't had to pee yet, but my longest training run ever has only been 8 miles.
