Since I'm home after bunion surgery last week, I've been watching crap tv that I normally never see, including the Dr. Oz show. The topic today was anorexia, including pro ana stuff. There was a guy on there who runs a website that has pro ana stuff on it, but he says the site also has forums for girls to get support who suffer from eating disorders so the site is doing good. There were women on there who weighed no more than 75 pounds, and a couple of young girls who are pro ana and just want to basically kill themselves to be thin by starving themselves. The guy who runs the website kept saying no, my site is to help women, i find it so sad what these women do to themselves, he just wouldn't admit that his website was helping the pro ana movement - it was kinda disgusting to watch him. There is a "thinspiration" link on his website where girls can find inspiration to be thin - and he thinks that is helping these girls and women? It did make me laugh when one of the women on the show who runs a treatment center said she was doing all she could not to punch the guy. It was such a sad show to watch, especially the teen girls who are starving themselves. I just can't believe there is something like a pro ana movement.

People who do things like pro ana sites seem to really not get that when you are 75 pounds--and have to go to treatment, there is a high likelyhood of death. It's that serious. A full-blown eating disorder is really serious and it's just painful to see it minimized like that.
This makes me incredibly sad. I am torn, while I think it is good to get information out there, I think Dr. Oz putting anything with Pro Ana on his show, even if he is trying to spin it negatively (as it is!), that it is showing these young women that it can get you attention, make you famous, etc.

When I was working on my MA one of my classmates was doing her dissertation on the Pro-Ana "movement." I was curious, so I started looking at it, too, and it was incredibly disturbing.
And I agree, I'm afraid that the show Dr. Oz put together might spur more girls onto these sites than away from.
