Time of day, activity outside, duration of said activity, etc. If we're going swimming, to a splashpad, etc, we put on sunscreen. If we go to the park, we put on sunscreen. If I'm going out for a run, it depends on the time of day, how sunny it is, etc. Our back deck is shaded in the afternoon, we have a giant umbrella, and his water table has an umbrella, so we usually don't put sunscreen on to play out there.
I hate putting sunscreen on my child. No matter what kind I use, he gets greasy. It makes him hard to pick up. It makes dirt and everything else stick to him. I plan our day around not having to use sunscreen.
I usually put it on daily regardless because he is very fair. I'm a lot darker than him (relatively), and I can burn in 20 minutes on an overcast late afternoon, so I'm overly cautious with him.

If the UV index is that low and he's going to be in the stroller with a shade, I wouldn't put it on. I kinda play it by ear, as far as how long we will be outside and how sunny it is.
I put it on every morning during the warm weather months (like from April-October), but I skip it now and then. If it's a cooler day and she is wearing leggings or a sweatshirt, I don't tend to bother to put it just on her face.
Special sunscreenflake -- we don't use it at all since they don't label for allergens and nut oils are often used. But in Seattle most of the time it's not too hot for lightweight long sleeved clothing and we generally avoid being outside in the hottest part of the day. I need to call manufacturers and ask about nuts but I've heard they're generally uncooperative.

I want to say off the top of my head California babies and vanicream sunscreen, but look me up.
ETA: and duh, ours is Babyganics that we use and it specifically says no nuts on it.
It depends, if it is kind of overcast and we aren't going to be out for hours I won't bother. I usually carry it in diaper bag so if it suddenly gets hot/sunny I can put it on.
When we in Italy and it was HOT every day and she'd be out in it for hours I'd put SPF 50 all over and reapply a couple times during the day. She still got a bit tanned which freaked me out!
We just don't spend a ton of time outside here and when we are out she is often in stroller (so the sun shade is down) or we are at the playground where it is pretty shaded.
I get paranoid putting too much sunscreen or bug spray on her because its still some kind of chemicals seeping in?
I don't put sunscreen on them much. We either play out in our backyard which is super shaded or are in the house during the sunny times. They get sunscreen if we are swimming/at a splashpad/at a sunny park for over an hour. May-October is hot as balls here though, so we generally just aren't outside.
I don't use it as much as I should (hardly ever, actually). It's been too hot here in the middle of the day to play outside in the sun, so we've been going out around 4pm. At that point I just don't worry about it.

Thank you thank you! I will seek out the babyganics no nut sunblock. Having it written on the container would make me feel much better.
Luke is super pale and bald so we use sunscreen if we're outside. I've been lazy about it though and now I need to research more about nut oils in them Our allergist gave us vanicream but its thick so I only use it on his face
If she's going to be in the sun for over 20-30 minutes in the early morning or evening then I do, if less then I don't. If we go out from like 10-6 I put it on, unless it is like running an errand.
If we're going to be outside in the sun for awhile I put it on, I've gotten burned at 6 pm before myself so I don't care what time of day it is. I don't put it on if we're just out for a couple minutes or in the shade. I have no idea what the uv index is.
I don't use the UV index, mainly because we are in Colorado and the sun is pretty strong and she's pretty light. And also I would have to look something up which sounds like work!
We put it on most of the time if he is going to be outside for more than 10 mins, but Max is really fair (ginger) and it's SoCal so we kinda have to. We live in a really shady area though, but most of our city is pretty exposed. We sometimes let him wander around the shade for a while before putting it on.

If we are outside more than 10-15 minutes (even if cloudy, because I got one of my worst burns when it was cloudy and I went without sunscreen), I put sunscreen on them. Both my dad and grandma have had precancerous cells removed from their skin, so I'm not taking any chances. Although my kids still tan like crazy even with sunscreen because of their Italian heritage.
They get SPF 50+ daily anytime they go outside for more than 5-10 minutes. They are pretty fair. DH is a ginger and Pedi stated at 2-3 months he wanted Sunblock on. Even with that, Kalvin has new moles. I have lots of moles and DH is polluted with freckles and moles (to the point of not being able to see how fair he is on his arms because there are freckles on top of freckles on top of....).
Daycare requires sunscreen daily April 1st-Nov unless its a rainy day and they stay indoors.
