My plan this week has me running 9 miles for my long run. Thing is, I'll be 5 hours from home, doing a mud run on Saturday with friends, with festivities sure to follow. Doing the run on Friday is out, since my schedule will be packed from the time I wake up to the time I get on the road.
I was thinking of getting to the race site early and doing 6 mi beforehand, then running as much as I can during the race itself (it's a no pressure, untimed thing). But how long between too long between the 2 segments no make it not be a true long run?
Should I just suck it up and try to do it at some point in Sunday? I'd either have to do it really early at my friend's house, though not sure what shape I'll be in, but will drink water all night if I have to, or wait until I get home, after 4+ hours in the car? WWHFD?
Well I would just skip it. At this point in my running life skipping one 9 miler for a weekend of fun is not going to make or break me. What I don't get from your op is whether it will make or break you.

ebeth, jene - I have my first half on Oct 13th. My longest run every was 7.5 mi last Monday. I've had calf and pelvis issues through this entire training cycle, so now that I'm healthy, I don't want miss any more long runs, or stray too far from my training plan with only 5 weeks left.
I am really slow, so this run will probably have me out for 1:45. DH's schedule right now doesn't really allow me to be out that long during the week, so Monday night is out.
I wouldn't run 6 miles before a mud run, it seems like a recipe for getting injured to me. If you think you need to get the run in I'd either run the miles after the mud run or the next day.

Sorry - this is the newbie in me coming out - so I do 3 on Saturday and 9 on Sunday, right? I am deathly afraid of getting reinjured, so I am thinking of wimping out on some of the obstacles.
I'm following a training plan for a half on 10/6 and it has me doing 2-3 miles on the day before a long run. So yes, I'd do the 3 on Saturday and 9 on Sunday. The shorter run warms up your legs. I've found that the short run the day before does actually help me feel better during the long run. I would just take it easy on some of the obstacles but you should be fine.

If you could get all that in that would be what I would do, but really if it doesn't work out and you end up getting in 6 on Sunday or not running all the miles it will be fine. Just keep going with your plan. We aren't training for the Olympics, life happens sometimes ya just got to do what you can and move on.
I was supposed to run 10 and 3 on Sat and Sun, but I ended up doing 7 and 7 because Mr. GT was running a half and I wanted to watch it. I couldn't figure out how to get 10 in on one day without doing too many miles, so I just adapted.
