I'm really upset by seeing graphic sexual assault scenes in movies. I was bored tonight and H isn't feeling well so I've got the tv to myself. I came across the movie Straw Dogs on IFC and just sat through an awful scene. Not too long ago I remember something similar in the movie The Hills Have Eyes.
I'm a big movie buff and can generally appreciate difficult content when it is for the sake of art, but I have to draw the line here. I feel like it was a bad writing and directorial choice, I guess. I mean, if there absolutely has to be a scene like that, there are ways to shoot it without being so graphic. And, if you haven't seen this movie, it was wholly unnecessary.
I'm really shaken up by it and angry. I know it's just a movie, but using something like that for entertainment value really turns my stomach.

No matter the movie, if there is a rape scene, I have to fast forward or leave the room. I can handle pretty much anything else. And this is coming from someone who deals with/talks about sexual assault and rape all the time for work. I'm sorry you were so bothered by it. Watch something happy and upbeat now to try to get it out of your head.

Maybe try not to think of it as entertainment, but more as awareness. I mean sure that's probably not why the director added it, but maybe someone somewhere watched that scene and it inspired them to start a group that helps people find ways to make a difference in rape statistics.
It's a far stretch but maybe spinning it that way can ease your stomach. Sometimes people need to see the gore to actually feel how horrifically real some world issues are.
Disclaimer: I have never seen either of the movies your mentioned. But I have seen a couple movies and tv shows that have touched on rape and some have had pretty graphic gut wrenching scenes.
I agree, I refuse to watch movies with graphic rape scenes or whatever. If there's an unexpected scene in a movie I'm watching I have to leave the room and I get so angry and upset.
Totally sympathise with you on this. It's horrible.

You know what is pretty unexpected though? (I'm still watching this awful movie... I know! Why?!) But one guy got his head severed in a bear trap. I don't know what happened to the other guy because I've been stewing over the scene and typing this post.
I DVR'd the cheesetastic Friends With Benefits the other day. I think I'm going to watch me some Justin Timberlake to get this out of my head before I go to bed.
I had to fast forward through that part. I remember watching an interview with Kate Bosworth and she was talking about how hard of a scene it was to do but the director wanted to stay true to the original. Also, she was dating Alexander Skaarsgard at the time, so I don't know how she did it as an actress.

Oh, wow, I had no idea. That is the mark of a good actress.
Also, for anyone who was wondering: the other guy gets shot by Kate Bosworth's character. Or so Wikipedia tells me.

Sorry to be insensitive, but I find it odd that it makes her a good actress, but the director is bad for putting the scene in. I've never seen the movie and don't really remember much of the Hills Have Eyes, but u remember the hills being all about the shock value (I went to see it as a teen with my friends and my friend was joking a lot through the whole movie. I remember his jokes more than the movie itself.)
It just bugs me a little that a director who makes a choice is worse than the actresses who does the scene anyway.

I saw that movie. I am a huge horror movie buff, but draw the line at rape scenes. That scene really bothered me too.
Besides that scene though the movie was SO SLOW. I know i was complaining in my head it was slow and then BAM horrible scene so yeah, i didn't like the movie.

Well, I mean, as an actress you don't really have a say, you just have to work with what you are told to do, YKWIM? Say she is convinced that it is necessary because it was in the original version of the movie or that it somehow enhances the plot or characterization, she still doesn't have any control over how it is filmed and what is shown. The director didn't have to film it in such a gratuitous way. What I mean by her being a good actress is that if she were dating him at the time it would probably be even more difficult to do a scene like that with him.
Apparently there's a new thing with teenagers playing video games where they say "get raped" and I guess it's like that whole "pwned" thing but just hearing about it makes me sick
I have never seen a movie with a rape scene. Chris and I usually keep our movie choices light.
I like a little bit of every genre because I just love movies so much. Unfortunately, sexual violence sometimes ends up as a component in horror films.
