Thanks to katinthehat for posting the link for the swim plan for swimming zero to 1 mile in 6 weeks. It seems like there are several new swimmers on this board and I wondered if anyone is interested in a support group/thread check-in related to this plan?
I'm happy to do regular swim check-ins although I'm not going to be following that plan. I usually swim at lunch, so I have been doing 1,000 yards. I have been shortening my warm up and cool down so that more of the thousand is just straight swimming. I've shaved off some serious time, and once I get it under 23:00, I plan to add at least another 100.
I'm doing long swims on the weekends, too - this past weekend was 1400, and I'm planning for 1600 this Saturday.
At some point, I may move 1 or 2 lunch time swims to one side of the workday for more time, but this is working for now.

I'm going to try to get back into swimming this winter, but I probably can't do much until December. It's all marathon training (and then recovery) until then. I think you'll be well ahead of me by then!

I think it's a good idea to keep this as a rolling thread so those who have done it / plan on doing it / are in the middle of it can keep on checking in.
Once this tri is over, I'm switching to more running base building and strength workouts so my swim time will be cut way down. I'm thinking about tackling this program again though, but focusing on going fast since I know I can do the distance now and seeing how fast I can get my mile time down.

Since you can do the distance already and want to focus on speed you should do lots of broken miles or the like. I remember in college we did 66 25s on the :30. You could do 16x100 etc and have a longer interval in between each hundred so you have to go fast! No excuses!

I'm down for a thread - as long as their is no time limit for finishing the swims and it's just for distance.
Oh yes, it's just about getting out there and swimming and if you want to swim for time you can but you don't have too. I don't feel qualified to lead the group though. I'm still flailing in the water.

Yeah, we should stay away from each other then. lol We'd need a safety kayak.
I'd like to check in. I am battling some serious knee pain so running is on the shelf for now. I swam today for the first time in a few years and did 30 laps. I would love to build up some endurance and get to a mile. All I could think of while I was swimming was Diana Nyad and how much she rules.
Despite only doing 2 swims this week, I stuck to my goal of a long swim that was 200 yards longer than last week's.
1600! My time was 39:45, which is about a zillion times faster than where I was 4 or 5 weeks ago! I'm frustrated about a lot of other fitness-related stuff right now, so it's nice to see that progress.
