I am so pissed. Last year I skipped the Philadelphia half for the same exact injury and I will do everything in my power not to miss it again.
Long story short, I've been consistently running for about 2 years. My last race was May (10 miler). Since then I have maintained a lazy summer running schedule of 2 runs during the week around 4-5 miles and a longer run on the weekend of 6-8. I despise running in the heat, so like I said, I have been lazy. My last longish run was a couple weeks ago and was 8.
This knee thing, ugh I have no idea what it is. It's not shoes, it's not increasing mileage or doing anything new. Basically it's knee pain under and around the kneecap, a sharp pain that kind of feels like my knee is going to give out/bend the wrong way. Occurs when running on impact and going down stairs, and happens out of nowhere. Last time this happened was October '12. I rested it for a few weeks and was able to get back into things rather quickly over the winter and PR at the 10 miler.
So, if I rest this for 2 weeks (so try running Sept 21 or so), do you think I can get back into running shape to do the half on Nov. 17? In the meantime I am doing the elliptical and swimming.
If it's been bugging you this long, go see a sports doc. Sounds similar to something that I've experienced. My doc, who is a runner, gave me a stretchy band and some exercises to do. X-rays showed my kneecaps aren't entirely aligned the way they should be and this is supposed to help.
Sigh. I know you guys are right. I am just dreading the time it will take to get in and then do the PT. I was hoping you all would be like, "You be be fine"

I've had knee pain in the past caused by ITBS and also tight quads. Stretching, foam rolling, and massage helped me. I don't know what's causing your issue, but trying those things probably won't hurt and it might help.
Also, I've started taking joint supplements and they've helped my knees A LOT. I'm kind of shocked by the improvement. It's the glucosamine/chindroitin stuff.

This is what I was coming here to say. I used to have pain under & around the knee cap, cracking, pain squatting, going down stairs, etc. Osteo biflex helped a ton! That, and I think just becoming a stronger runner overall. While my knees still ache here & there in the peak of training, it's nothing noticeable or derailing.
Thanks for all the suggestions ladies. So here is a new wrinkle: I was "jogging" through IKEA today to get my older daughter out of SmalWorld before her time expired. I was wearing my Petuluma boots, which are pretty much nothing, a strip of recycled tire as the sole and leather(baggy). NO PAIN at all, whereas when I run in my sneakers the pain is first step.
I wear a pretty heavy stability shoe. I've worn the same shoe for years and years, was refitted 2 years ago after I had my daughter and picked the same shoe I've always worn. So while it is the same shoe, I DID start breaking in a new pair last week. I am trying to think back to last year and I am pretty sure I might have been breaking in a new pair when the pain first happened.
So, maybe I should be refitted again? I've lost some weight and what makes me think my arch/pronation make be shifting is I am getting blisters where I never did before, on my outer foot.
I will def. be more dedicated to my foam rolling and try the supplements as well.
Yes, try a new shoe! DH was having horrible shin & calf pain. He switched shoes & it's helped a lot. He was put in a beast of a stability shoe. He's still in a stability , but it's much less than his original pair.
