H goes into the kitchen and says, "Um, there are a bunch of little bugs all over the ceiling in here." Awesome. I figure he is talking about fruit flies or gnats or something. So I go in to see what he's talking about.
He opens his hand and is holding these tiny larvae, maggoty-looking little squirmy things. Fucking ew. He found like 15 of them on the ceiling of our kitchen. I have no idea why they are there. We don't have any bad food in the house.
I am a total loss, but we need to figure it out since I don't want them back. Any ideas?
And now I am totally gagging and grossed out and hiding in the living room.
My guess is something has died in the ceiling (squirrel, mouse, etc) and is decomposing. Which... Ew. I'd send my DH up to look (cuz that shit is NOT my job) and then we'd call an exterminator for removal of whatever is up there.

Well I don't see anyway they are coming through the ceiling. They were most concentrated by the door that leads into our garage. But we scoured the garage, the basement, every room in the house, double checked all our food in the cabinets and fridge, etc. They weren't really by the food though.
H is heading out to our attic access in the garage right now.

Kitchen or pantry moths. Google them and burn your house down. We got them in our house from a bag of flour from a cheap grocery store. If google pics look the same then throw out all open food and bleach clean your cabinets. They hide everywhere. Open all boxed food and see if you see any in there and toss. Google and let me know.
Hmm. He found nothing in the attic. I am at a loss. Could this just be a nightmarish one-off that never happens again? lol
Do you keep any pet food nearby where you found them? My assistant had an issue once that sounds similar, and it turned out to be a bad bag of dog food that had been infested at the factory somehow.
My cleaning lady forgot to take the trash out while I was gone on vacation. I came back home 10 days later and the house was smelling funky. I realized it was the trash and so I took it. I come back the kitchen and notice a trail of maggots from the kitchen to the garage. I squealed and made my husband kill them, and of course the brilliant man decides that the best way to kill them is to spray with raid. Fml

The pantry moths are so gross and annoying. We had them at my parents when I was younger. We think they started in a box of small pasta balls. It took months to get them all gone.

Sorry, I left to watch Breaking Bad.
I am going to have H google the pantry moth thing. Squirmy maggoty-things make me want to vomit and I've had about all I can handle tonight lol.
We will check the dog food--we keep her food (TOTW) in a sealed container in the garage, but it's possible.
We did think of one possibility. They were all centered near/above one of our two kitchen garbage cans. This particular garbage can we NEVER throw food away in--we use the other can for that. However, I don't know that my parents know this, and recently they were at our house dog-sitting and could have thrown something in there. We took it out today, didn't notice a foul odor but didn't really pay attention. So that could be a possible cause.
Pantry moths. We've had epic battles with them and killed many larvae crawling across our ceiling.
So did we. It was horrid. Someone tag her! I need an update.
We had these fuckers twice. The first time, I must have missed some larvae somewhere. Threw out the stuff that was infested, bleached, etc. Two weeks later, infested again. That time, I just threw every single item that wasn't canned in the trash.

Ditto. We had them for a while and it was a giant pain in the ass. I got some pantry moth traps from Gardeners's Supply and that took care of them.
