River Bend’s new caretakers taking steps toward viability
CALEDONIA — Just two weeks after a new organization signed a lease to run River Bend Nature Center, it had already put several important pieces in place.
On June 4 River Bend Nature Center Inc. signed a 10-year lease with Racine County, with renewal provisions, to run the nature center. Earlier this year the county bought the 76-acre natural area from the YWCA of Racine with $400,000 from the county’s Land and Water Conservation fund.
“We’ll operate River Bend as a nature center like it was, and grow it from there,” Board President Roger Chernik said Monday.
River Bend was formerly owned by the YWCA and the let it go to shit. You have NO IDEA how bad it was. "We've" now put together a 503c to run it, established a board of directors (I'm not on it but am part of the initiative to get things rolling), are starting to interview for naturalists, etc. Also doing a lot cleaning and hard work. I've taken my Fridays off between now and the end of July and spend them there. SO much work to do. We spent last weekend scrubbing animal feces out of the apartments.... *shudder* Anyway, I think it's pretty awesome.
