a friend of mine who calls herself "the queen of "one more drink"" wants me to go to dinner with her Friday night (DH is working) - BUT i am scheduled to do a 4 mile run then yoga on a paddleboard (so my day would start about 6:30 am).
alcohol would no doubt hurt my run not to mention being out a little later than normal.
ahhh what to do? accept? reject? reschedule run? reschedule dinner?
Accept. Just because she has no self control doesn't mean you have to go booze-crazy, too.
Ditto. I would have a drink or two with dinner and drink a ton of water. I wouldn't stay out too late. If you're having a great time and would like another drink or you would like to stay out later and it's possible to do the run Sunday, I would do that. You have several choices here.
You don't have to drink! I always feel gross in the morning even after just one glass (no matter how much water I chug the night before). I would have one glass at the most, but you don't have to cancel plans, you're an adult.
its not so much the alcohol but the "late" night and early morning i am worried about
You just started your half training, right? This is your first? This is going to come up and you're going to have to find a way to stick to your training while still living your life. Finding the balance and not letting the training completely control is always tricky. Typically when I'm marathon training, I stay home the night before, it's nothing but water & I'm in bed at a decent time. If something came up though (friends in town, dinner out, holiday party etc) I would move my run & still enjoy whatever was going on in my life. If the run couldn't be moved, I still went out, kept drinks & being out too late under control and then maybe I suffered a little the next day, but I did it.

yea - i'm just in week 3. and yes, juggling is very hard since this is such a priority for me. thanks for the words of wisdom. i think i am more nervous to juggle the schedule around because its my first 1/2 and i don't want to fail. you are so right though! i am going to email back right now and accept!

i comlpetely agree with this. you ahve to be able to work it into your life.
for marathon training, i try to not overschedule myself. if i have a late night, i try to make sure i have a day to catch up on sleep, otherwise my long run will kill me. so one late night is fine. several late nights and busy days on top of training is hard. you just need to figure out how to fit it into your life.
Live your life. Your workout the next day may be a little tougher than normal, but you can't give up your social life entirely in the name of fitness. Limit the booze, try to call it a night a little earlier than usual, and enjoy!

thanks guys! those comments/words of wisdom were really helpful. finding a balance can be hard!
It can be, but one way to think about it is that if you give up other things you enjoy in life you'll be less likely to stick to your training long-term. Finding a balance that makes you happy even when the initial excitement wears off will be really valuable long-term.
Have fun with your friend and during your workout!
