Poor L! I hope it gets better sooon. Alexis had a yeast infection and the pedi told me to but plain Maalox or Mylanta on and it would keep any acid away from her skin? It helped her a lot. I put it on first let it dry and put her rx cream on after.
I don't see why you wouldn't be able to do both. It looks like mupirocin is specific to staph, so if they're not certain it is staph, they may not want to use it. It's one of the few drugs that can actually deal with MRSA, so they want to protect that.
Did the doctor mention anything about bleach baths? You wouldn't want to do it while he has open wounds, but you can give a full bath with a cup of bleach in the water (so it's basically a really strong swimming pool)a few times a week for three or so weeks, and it can help kill the excessive bacteria colony on the skin.
