Saw this article on cnn today...very scary, especially for young babies who can't be vaccinated. In 2011, 40% of children under age 5 with measles had to receive hospital treatment.

In 2011, B ended up getting his second MMR because of the measles outbreak then. I am wondering if P will end up getting her second dose at her 18 month well check if there is an outbreak near us. (Only a four week wait between doses is necessary, although the second dose is often lumped in with shots they get before school.)

Man, it would be a nightmare for us to have the MMRs so close together; Butterbaby was sick for like three days a week after his MMR.

People who don't vaccinate make me nuts!
We've been really lucky. Just the occasional mild temp or runny nose after vaccinations. I just remember in 2011 the pedi made calls to everyone who was eligible for their second dose and strongly recommended that they come in to get it asap, because some people don't develop full immunity until after the second shot.
My pedi automatically does the MMR at 12 months and 18 months, so E is getting his second dose in a few weeks. He got a baaaaaad measles rash from the first dose, so I'm very unexcited for this. Oh well.
With H I was super happy that he had both doses by 18 months because when he was 2 there were several cases of measles in our town.
What's really scary is for the people who can't get vaccines. A friend of mine is allergic to eggs and some vaccines have raw eggs in them, so she and her kids can't get some vaccines. Another friend's daughter has allergies too. They have to rely on herd immunity to stay safe. They don't even have a choice.
One of our very close friends is in chiropractic school and he is completely anti-vax. I have shown him articles like this measles one and they don't change his opinion in the least. They don't have kids yet, but I am pleading with his wife that she put her foot down and vax their future kids (they are TTC).

One of my college friends is really anti-vax. Not only is she all "vaccines are poison and cause autism," but she believes it's hypocritical for anyone who is pro-life to get a vaccine because some of them were originally created with cells from an aborted baby (that fact is true, but her logic is just crazy-cakes).
