Washington post on twitter said he was military but its not known if he is active duty right now or was in the military. But they didn't say at the press conference.
If he really was a contractor, he would not be active duty military. He could be in the Reserve/National Guard or retired military. there is going to be a ton of info on him if he was military.

So when *is* the right time to say "Gee, we have an awful lot of shootings in this country - we really ought to change that"? This evening? The next day? The next week? Next month? Never? I hear a lot of "this is not the tIime to talk about it" but very little "this IS the time."
I think it's prudent to at least
understand basic stuff like whether the shooters are military or civilian. Â
I think it's probably pretty to wait especially when our police can't even shoot the right person. so is it a gun problem, a person problem, what?

In the wise words of Charles Ramsey "we need everything!" So much needs to be addressed but in our last conversation about guns TTT did have a couple suggestions I thought reasonable.
So were there multiple shooters? Is this the only one IDed?
This is what I want to know! Even though my family lives on the other side of town I am still concerned. Though if there is another shooter I am kinda hoping the old time residents of Southeast and find his ass
My friend's cubicle was a few feet from the shooter today. At least one of her coworkers is dead (based on what she saw) and a number of coworkers are unaccounted for. It sounds like she was extremely lucky to have made it out unharmed. Terrifying.
I read her/your story on ML. That's a damn good argument for limiting the magazine capacity.
I'm sorry for her experience, and I hope she gets the support she'll need.

Oh my goodness. I'm so sorry for your friend and her coworkers.
One of the teams of people we have on the site is working on the HP contract the shooter was. And we still haven't gotten an "all accounted for" e-mail at work, which isn't normal for my company. I'm hoping they are all okay.

I find the attempt to politicize this before we know basically anything about it pretty offputting.
I imagine anytime is not the right time seeing as the dozens of articles TTT has posted on random shootings and violence, the only regular conservative on the board who engages is Pamela anyways.

Tbf, when most of ttt's posts on this subject are laced with cynicism and snark...there's not much discussion to be had. I know that is hard to hear (in general, not by you) but if we're being honest. Eta I get passion but most agree something must be done as well as there is a time and place.
Shooting occurs. Ttt posts the link. A few posters respond with comments of "omg," "how tragic," and at least one "gun violence isn't real, see?!?!?"
And we're on to the next thread and another day when the same thing will happen again.
No one engages because at this point it's preaching to the choir. And that's no offense to ttt; she's expressed helplessness at why it keeps happening, and we all feel it. She posts each time to maintain awareness, but we're all either already alerted to the incident or reticent to engage when just about each thread ends up at the exact same place.
We need a new tactic, and it may not entail just posting a link for the same cycle each day. We need new and more effective ways to deal with it each time. And I mean taking action, not just venting.
Maybe donate $5 or $10 to an anti- or non-NRA organization each time? Or message your legislators with each instance? I'm tossing out ideas and I'm sure others would have some better ones.
So Alexis had a valid ID to enter the building but witnesses question how he was able to get his gun inside. At first I wasn't sure if it's typical for there to be people carrying arms at the Navy Yard but it doesn't sound like it. But he did shoot the security guard upon entering the building and took the guard's gun too so I don't know what other kinds of security are in place to prevent entrance with a weapon like he had.

Agreed 100% Its also so very sad that when we are speaking about something being cyclical the subject matter is mass shootings

Agree too. It's partially why I kept the suggested donation amounts low... the frequency of larger amounts could greatly impact budgets.

What is your point exactly?
Frustration. PP (can't remember who) was right that gun control is pointless to discuss and we'd be better off just continuing donating to orgs than talking about it here.
The real problem, though, is that public opinion simply doesn't support doing anything about guns. People just don't care that much. That's the bottom line. Poll after poll shows this. If the massacre of 20 six year olds didn't get people furious and prompt Congress to take action because they knew that they'd lose reelection if they didn't do *something*, then nothing will. That's just all there is to it.
What else could possibly change people's opinions? That's not a snarky question - I mean it. What could happen that would actually shock people into action, into demanding from their Congresspeople that *something* be done about guns, even if it doesn't solve the problem completely? Another first grade slaughter but this time with fifty children dead? A hundred? A nursery school with infants killed? Seriously, what would it take? I can't imagine anything that would truly shock people into action beyond what happened at Sandy Hook, short of every single family in America personally losing a child to gun violence.
So yes I am cynical. Because while money and the NRA do make a difference, the bottom line is that the American people's apathy is really to blame. And I don't know if anything can be done about that.
And I know I should probably just give up and stop posting since it seems to serve only to annoy people on here.

a peta style org that will hold posters of sandy hook bodies outside every gun store?
I know that was TIC but it wouldn't work. Pics like that don't work against the Constitution. And fear of gov't takeover trumps fear of your kids school or your workplace getting shot up.
