I flew into Buffalo. It's not a long drive from there. Definitely take your passport and go to the Canadian side if you can. I'm not an expert, but I've been there in January and in August. Summer is definitely better. If you are there long enough, and especially if you go in the fall, I think it's worth a trip to the Finger Lakes. So beautiful.

This is what we did. It was about 40 mins maybe from picking up the car at the airport until crossing the border. We were about 1 mile inside the border and we when in May over Memorial day weekend. It was too cold!

Buffalo Niagara International Airport
I live in Buffalo, and our winters get pretty cold. I'd say the best time to visit would be summer or fall.
IMO, there's a lot more to do on the Canadian side of the Falls, so bring a pass port if you have one. If you're renting a car, drive to Niagara-on-the-Lake (Canada) and visit a winery or two. You could also visit the Finger Lakes or Ellicottville.
Ditto Buffalo. We actually took the Greyhound to NF because we were continuing on to Toronto and didn't want to have a car there.
We were there for 2 days and stayed on the Canadian side, which had more hotel options and more stuff to do than the American side. There are a lot of tourist trap type attractions - haunted houses, mini golf, laser tag. We also did the Skywheel which seemed worth the money. Food is mainly chain restaurants and more expensive than usual. I'm still reeling from my $8 medium pumpkin spice latte! Most businesses on the Canadian side seemed happy to take US currency.
There's a great brewery/restaurant a few minutes away from the center of town - www.tapsbeer.ca/blog/ We liked it so much we went twice.
The American side is more park like, with lots of green spaces. I love that you have both options. We just walked across the Rainbow Bridge. We did the Cave of the Winds which lets you go right to the base of the falls. The raw power in all that water is really impressive and we greatly enjoyed it. That's not open in the Winter because they actually disassemble the walkway at the end of each Fall. You can catch the Maid of the Mist on either side and it's a few dollars cheaper on the US side.
If we'd had more time we would have done the Behind the Falls experience on the Canadian side as well. There are supposed to be some nice places to walk/cycle around Niagara Falls that we didn't get a chance to check out. I also would have done Niagara on the Lake and the wineries if we'd had a car.
Drove, didn't fly but I second flying into Buffalo. We went in August because it gets cold and snowy early up there! We didn't day trip but instead went about 1 1/2 north to Toronto for a few days which I highly recommend!

We did both the Behind the Falls Experience and Maid of the Mist (Is that the right name? It's been a a while. I mean the boat ride that takes you up to the falls.) The Boat ride was a fun experience and worth the money. Neither of us thought the Behind the Falls one was that great.
