We went straight from NB covers and prefolds to a combination of one-size all-in-ones and pockets. I think by 10-12 pounds, we could use the one-size diapers without a problem.
We used mostly BumGenius, though I had a few other diapers, too. I wasn't willing to outlay the cash for pricy new cloth diapers, so I bought used ones and stripped the hell out of them. BumGenius was the easiest for me to find locally on Craigslist.

Past the newborn phase, we used sunbaby and kawaiis a lot because we were poor and they were the cheapest lol. We used hemp inserts for both. Since we couldn't line dry outside (apartment living), I washed diapers daily, so there was never a lot to wash and dry at once. Dryer balls seemed to help, too.

We used prefolds and covers for the newborn phase with my son. He was ready for the next size at around 10 lbs. Before he was born, I bought a mix of yellow edge GMD prefolds and a few covers, a few fitteds and a few pocket diapers. My plan was to use the prefolds/covers and have the other options for night time or babysitters/daycare. However, we kept grabbing the pockets because they were so much easier/more convenient. I ended up ordering more pockets and we now exclusively use those. I actually went back and ordered even more pockets a few months later so that we could have plenty to leave a few extras at daycare/in the diaper bag/etc and not keep running into laundry emergencies. I wash diapers every other day. Most times I put the inserts in the dryer and hang the pockets to dry. However, every once in awhile I throw the pockets in the dryer too if I don't want to wait. The pockets air dry over night on my drying rack. Btw, if you want to save money, I order my pockets and inserts from Assunta Store. They're much cheaper than any other pockets and covers that I've found. They've held up really well. I have family members that are over a year of continuous use with them and haven't had any wear issues. It's a cool organization too (profits support Chinese orphanage). I've becomer sort of cloth diaper obsessed over the past six months! Let me know if you need any advice.
We used disposables (Earth's Best) the first 3-4 months. We started FT CD'ing around 4 months. We exclusively use Flips -- they really do work the best for us. We used disposables b/c the thought of putting a diaper together in the middle of the night w 2 babies crying was too much for us. We still use disposables at night.
We bought slowly, so I would suggest the same. We bought a Daypack of Flips to try and it worked well. Maybe start when you still have time in the NB diapers? That way you won't feel rushed.

I didn't start CDing till my son was 4mo old. I therefore only bought one size diapers. With my daughter, I decided to wait until she was out of NB diapers as well. She's only 2.5 mo, but I have her in size 1 prefolds and Rumparooz, Flip, and Thirsties covers. I love prefolds, they are cheap and leak proof. She was able to wear them starting at 6 weeks old.
I also have her in some Fuzzi Bunz OS Elites.I love the minky material, and they aren't as bulky as many CDs. Unfortunately, my son outgrew them by 10 mo. He was super chunky, so they didn't last long. That's all she wears so far, but Im pretty happy with her stash.
ETA: There's a CDing store in my city where you can do trial packs. They give you all different types of diapers to try to see what you like. Might be a good way to see what you like best.
