It depends on what you want the godparents for. Is it for a Catholic church? When my sisters and I were baptized they made my parents pick practicing Catholic couples, which made their choices more limited. Picking couples has its downsides too; if they break up, your kids might not see one of them very much. I've never even met my godfather.

In my family my parents always picked one from Mom's side, one from Dad's side (everyone is Catholic). These were not the same as our Guardians. For my son, we were instructed that at least one had to be a practicing Catholic and that they had to be one female, one male. Also, there could only be two. My husband's family is not religious at all, not Catholic and not all that involved in our lives (except his parents). He said he'd prefer we pick two from my side. So, our son's Godparents are my only sister and my youngest brother (who is also my Godson). These are also not the same people that would be our son's Guardian (my parents).
