We are going out of town this weekend and my inlaws are keeping the kids. DS1 is in elementary school, DS2 is in daycare just under 10 minutes away. Based on when we need to leave on Friday, to make my inlaws' life much easier we could pick DS1 up from school an hour or so before dismissal and take him over to their house - but I know the school really stresses attendance so I'm not sure if this would be a Big Thing?

Not a big deal at all. I don't hesitate to do this until my kids are 2nd or 3rd grade. Even then, family first. Though it's a bitch to have to make up work.
I would. If your kid won't rat you out, you could always claim a doctors appointment or something.
I am a teacher, albeit in middle school, and I don't care at all if you take your kid out early every now and then or if they miss a day here or there for whatever reason. But I hate it when the parents lie about it. The kid will talk all about going to the beach or whatever and then all of a sudden there's a note on Monday saying "fever" or "upset stomach." I always want to say wow that long weekend to the beach must have sucked since you were sick for part of it huh?
NBD at all. Something like that is coded as an early release in my district. I don't event think it's recorded as an absence. As long as this isn't an every Friday thing, the school won't care.
