The five farmers stick works the best for me or for really awful stuff winning colours, which claims to be all natural, but smells like heavy solvent. It's never damaged an item, but I hate using it.

I use two scoops of powdered oxyclean in the boys' laundry and pretreat stains directly with liquid oxyclean. Sometimes you need to scrub it a bit and let it soak in, but it does get most things out. It gets out spaghetti sauce and even took homemade BBQ sauce out of my wedding dress!
For the really stubborn grease stains, I collect several and soak in acetone. It works.

Could you apply acetone directly to a stain with a cotton ball? I have one on a jacket and shout didn't touch it. (Shout is the only conventional/non-green product that I use. Stains are the enemy, yo.)
I used to swear by PermaPress but can't get it locally anymore since I moved. I used to always find it at Publix and a few other grocery stores. My grandma used to stock up when she'd visit us in Florida and bring it back to TX with her.
Now I usually just wet the stain and rub a Sunlight bar of soap on it.

As long as it's a jacket you can submerge, go ahead and fill a shallow bowl/pan with acetone and soak the stain in it. Scrub, soak, rinse thoroughly with water, and then machine wash. It may take a few rinsings/washings to get the smell out.
There is a product called lestoil that is a multi-purpose cleaner, but laundry is one of its purposes. It gets out everything. Grass, blood, grease, set in stains, etc. It is amazing.
if i've forgotten to pretreat like a mofo, i'll pour a little clorox 2 (the colorsafe bleach) directly onto the stains right before i throw them in the wash.
also, a surprisingly effective pretreatment option for relatively fresh grease/oil stains is baby powder. i put a nice thick coating on the stain and let it sit at least overnight and then sort of scrape it off. most of the grease comes with it. this is especially nice for things that are difficult or a pain to launder, like bedding or furniture (i use the brushy attachment thing and vacuum up the baby powder).
