The icing on our church's cake! The committee (I don't have a vote) approved the church to do a 100K roof repair since we've raised 80% of the money and yet we can't pay our $2k gas bill.
I wrote a check for $49K the other day for the first payment on the roof.

I get that money in a church is always tight, but the plain and simple fact is that that amount doesn't belong in the general operating fund. it belongs in your paycheck, as part of his compensation package. I don't really see how they could say they won't give you the money because it is there, on paper, as part of his contract and salary. To use it otherwise and intentionally withhold it from you would be breach of that contract, right? (lol at me trying to be all fancy and use a lawyery term).

Wow. Pastors/priests/ministers are so underpaid to begin with. Are they just giving DH checks less than they should be? Maybe they are assuming you will tithe, so they're just taking the tithe out to begin with (just kidding). I've been on the Council for a church that was consistently short of funds. It is not fun to determine what gets its funding chopped, but screwing over the pastor was never an option. I hope you are able to fix this on the local level. I'm just flabbergasted. If they don't pay your DH, he will eventually leave for another position. And how are they going to fill it, considering their present practices. Also, if you can't get the money, would DH consider a short term action like reducing his workweek to 50 hours or something? When they realize how much extra he does, would that help?
That sucks. I hope you can get things straightened out, but if the $$ isn't there to start with, I'm not sure what they can tangibly do for you. Good luck.
But I'm with Tamb on the health insurance thing. Everywhere I've worked, if you decline the health insurance or have other coverage, you don't get a cash payout. It just saves your employer $.
It sounds like there are some accounting irregularities going on if the budget says it's paying $6400 it isn't. But clearing up those irregularities wouldn't mean more money in your pocket - perhaps more money from your parish to the conference. The other $1600 is another matter, of course.

How fucked up is that?!
yep. and you can't touch any of that money for anything else or it will hurt the feelings of the people who donated for the roof. right?!
Yup.
We are $3500 behind in our bills and get less than 1k in offerings.
Someone suggested we put the church staff (who already work PT) on furlough for the whole month of October.
