I don't like the fact that they cast a child in the role of Red Riding Hood. That totally takes away from the sexual tension of Hello, Little Girl. And wastes Johnny Depp as the Wolf.
I'm not convinced that Meryl has the vocal chops for the role of the Witch. Mama Mia wasn't as vocally challenging as singing anything by Sondheim is. But if Helena Bonham Carter can sort of sing Mrs. Lovette and not butcher the role due to her acting awesomeness, I suppose Meryl can work this part.
Squee! I am still wary of it. I mean...no bernadette peters? I am not sure how that works lol.
Oooh, good point.
So, I googled it and Meryl Streep is playing the witch.
I...don't know how to feel about this. I love Meryl Streep, she was great in Mama Mia. But, Bernadette Peters is the witch. Tough call
Yes. I am having trouble with this. People have assured me it'll be fine.
I mean, I'm planning to see it, and I'll also be singing along to every word. I'm having real trouble picturing it without Peters, though. I'm also concerned about Emily Blunt. Can she sing? I love her, but I have no idea if she can sing.

And the baker's wife is no joke
I agree with Dixie too. I think I saw that Jack is also being played by a kid? Not as big of a deal, but with Red Riding Hood, it does kill her story line with the wolf a bit
Oh I don't deny that she couldn't sing that role to save her life (and I was seriously judging. Mrs. L is my DREAM role) but she semi-salvaged it by her acting performance.

Are they going to take away all the sex that happens with Little Red, because having a little girl play the part is gross.
And there is no way Meryl can pull off the witch vocally. She was terrible in Mama Mia (although that show is just terrible), and that music is super easy to sing.
I am terrified of this as well. Into the Woods is one of my all time favorites and I am just not sure how well it will translate into a movie.
I'm really scared. I need to be held. Preferably by Bernadette Peters.
gozf - any show you want to see that's on now? I'm going to make Mel go to something with me before she pops this kid out. You should schlep into the city and see something with us!
edit: Or, or, or, we could all wait and give Mel a reason to bust out after the baby and go see Hedwig!

I would totally do this! I'd just need a little notice, so I can make sure I have the funds.
As far as what I want to see.... That's kind of like asking me what I'd like to eat -- the answer is usually "I don't know, everything sounds good!" I am not picky about my theatre. That said, I would die to see MacBeth, because Alan Cumming. Or Kinky Boots, because Cyndi Lauper. Or Pippin, because I was in it in high school, so I have a total soft spot. Richard the III, The Glass Menagerie....

I WILL DIE IF I DON'T SEE HEDWIG.
My old firm is handling it. I want to make this happen!!!!!!!
In the meantime, we will see something. Mel, are you in NYC yet or still on your southwest tour?

I always have mixed feelings about movie versions of musicals. I love musicals, but I am always worried that Hollywood will butcher them, especially since the cast usually consists of non-singers.

Meryl Streep is no great singer though. I'm also concerned about some of the other actors and their singing ability too. Hopefully I'll be pleasantly surprised instead of this being another Les Mis.
